Chapter 10
Liam finally exhaled a sigh of relief. He directed his secretary to book a flight, then headed directly to the airport. Meanwhile, Seraphina, fretting over his silence, decided to call.
Liam answered, his voice laced with irritation. “What is it?”
Seraphina hesitated before speaking in a wounded tone, her voice breaking into sobs. “Liam, what’s wrong? My wound is infected, and Cassian is tied up with work. There’s no one else I can lean on, so I had to call you. Are you busy? If you are, I won’t impose…”
She claimed she didn’t want to bother him, yet made no attempt to end the call. In the past, Liam would have turned his car around

immediately and rushed to the hospital. But this time, his voice was devoid of warmth.
“If it’s infected, go see a doctor. What do you expect me to do? I’m busy. I’m hanging up.”
“Liam, what’s happened to you? You’ve never been like this before. Is it because Mireille’s back? Did she get to you? I know Aunt Celestine’s death has affected her deeply. If she said I fell on purpose, please don’t fight with her. I’ll apologize once I’m out of the hospital.”
It was the same manipulative routine, but now, Liam had no patience for it. “Seraphina, haven’t you had enough? Don’t drag Mireille into this. She’s never spoken badly about you. It’s you who keeps badmouthing her!”
“That incident was three years ago. What do you want to hear by bringing it up now? That Mireille doesn’t blame you? Or that

she knows she was wrong? You’re aware of the truth. Don’t pretend otherwise. Mireille would never do such a thing. Stop deceiving yourself.”
“I’ve seen the online rumors. You have three days to handle this. When I return, I don’t want us to ever communicate again!” With that, he hung up, immediately blocking and deleting her contact.
By the time his plane landed, it was the next morning.
I had just stepped out of my apartment, en route to a job interview, when I saw him downstairs. Snow dusted his down jacket lightly, indicating he had been waiting for a while.
I turned to leave, but he caught my arm. “Mireille… It’s me. I’m here to see you. I

know I’ve wronged you over these past three years. I’ve made you suffer. All I ask is a chance to explain.”
He looked worn out, exhaustion evident in his travel–weary eyes. Nonetheless, I didn’t want to spare him any more time. I shook off his hand. “There’s nothing to explain.”
“Are you going to deny writing that forgiveness letter? Or that the hotel abroad wasn’t for Seraphina? Or that the monthly one million wasn’t for her? Liam, there’s nothing left between us. I left to give you both space. Why are you here now? To see if I’m miserable without you? To be disappointed that I’m not?”
He was taken aback, silent and struggling to find words. “No, it’s not like that. Please, let me explain. Seraphina had no one abroad; I was just afraid she wouldn’t have money.

The hotel thing was a coincidence. I had no
idea she’d choose to stay there…”
