Chapter 4
This hurt far more than when I first learned of Daniel’s affair.
My chest felt tight, but I couldn’t even breathe freely, terrified that they would notice me if they turned around.
I carefully stepped back, but suddenly, a sharp scream rang out behind me.
At the same time, Daniel and Penny turned toward me.
Panicking, I reacted quickly, grabbing a tall man next to me and ducking behind him.
I hadn’t noticed the girl standing behind me as I moved. She had a cup of milk tea, and now the drink spilled all over her floral dress.

I quietly apologized while quickly glancing back at Daniel and Penny.
Luckily, they hadn’t been distracted by the commotion.
The tall man was the girl’s boyfriend. When they saw my big belly and how pale I looked, they didn’t say anything and just walked
away.
I stumbled toward the bathroom, feeling my back drenched in cold sweat despite the cool autumn breeze.
When I came out of the restroom, I spotted Penny right away.
Though she was in her forties, she took excellent care of herself. Her face was still
stunningly beautiful, and her figure

was curvaceous. Not only men, but even I couldn’t help but glance at her a little longer.
Penny was standing under a sycamore tree, leisurely talking on the phone. When she saw me, she immediately ended the call and switched to a concerned expression.
“Jane, are you okay?”
My eyes were swollen and red, and after throwing up earlier, my face was pale, looking ghostly.
“The pregnancy symptoms are too much. I want to go home,” I said weakly.
Penny sized me up, sighed, and then spoke.
“Alright, I’ll call Daniel.”
I watched her fake concern as she called

Daniel, telling him I wasn’t feeling well and asking him to head to the car first.
The whole thing struck me as absurd.
On the way back, I leaned against the car window, closing my eyes to pretend I was resting.
Daniel was focused on driving, glancing at me occasionally in the rearview mirror.
Perhaps sensing something was off, Penny, who was usually so gentle and considerate, remained completely silent during the entire ride.
The three of us fell into silence, each of us hiding our true intentions.
I gently rubbed my pregnant belly, feeling the baby’s movements.

My mind was racing, filled with resentment. I would never let this pair of treacherous people take the inheritance my father left for
- me.
If it came to it, I’d destroy everything rather than give in.
After we got home, Penny noticed how pale I looked and wanted to stay to take care of
- me.
I gave her a cold glance.
“Fine. Thanks, Penny.”
That night, I kicked Daniel out of the main bedroom to the guest room on the first floor, and let Penny stay with me.
Daniel pretended to be jealous, purposely

saying in front of me that now that my stepmother was here, I didn’t need my husband anymore.
The fake sweetness in his voice made my disgust surge again.
Before dawn, Daniel left for work.
I turned to Penny and said, “He’s gone to the office. Follow and keep an eye on him for me.”
Penny nodded.
Once they both left, I quickly ordered a pinhole camera online, requesting it be installed that same day.
The flagship store had good service, and the staff arrived on time.

I had cameras installed in the bedroom, living room, kitchen, and even the bathroom.
After everything was set up, I asked themad to clean the house thoroughly.
At 4 p.m., Penny came back.
I pretended to be asleep.
Penny didn’t disturb me; she just went straight into the kitchen.
I switched on the kitchen camera and saw her organizing the vegetables in the fridge.
Then she took out a small bag, carefully looking at the words on it.
I zoomed in on the screen, trying to see what it said, but it was too blurry to make out.

However, I could clearly read the large letters on the package: Walmart Pharmacy.
A bitter smile tugged at my lips. Looks like they were planning to poison me.
I forced myself to stay calm, acting like nothing was wrong.
At 5:30 p.m., Daniel returned.
