After he came back, I urgently told them that my aunt had called, saying that my grandmother had fallen at home and was being taken to the hospital. My aunt wanted me to hurry back.
After I said this, Daniel and Penny exchanged a glance.
I grabbed my already packed suitcase and rushed to the door.
Daniel stopped me, saying he’d go with me.
I pressed his hand down and said, “No need, the company still needs you. Stay here and earn the milk money.”

A chill ran through me, but I kept my smile in place, pretending I hadn’t seen it.
“Alright, then. I’ll walk you downstairs,” Daniel said, taking my suitcase.
I nodded.
The driver was already waiting for me at the community gate.
“Richard, to the Presbyterian Hospital”
I needed a quiet place to clear my mind and figure out what to do next.
Daniel was my senior, and he was the heartthrob of our university. I first heard of him during my freshman year.

But throughout college, he didn’t date anyone, and my roommates told me that he had a “beloved one” in his heart.
The first time I met him was during an off–campus activity.
Daniel was tall, handsome, and gentle. As a young girl, I quickly fell for him.

She cried her eyes out during the ceremony, and I thought it was because she was reminded of my father, who tragically died in a plane crash two years ago.
Since then, Penny had never remarried and continued to care for me as a stepmother. To ease the atmosphere, I even suggested that Daniel introduce some young, handsome men to her.
That day, Penny looked at me with admiration.
‘Jane, you’re really lucky to have found such
an excellent man like Daniel,” she said.
Such a simple sentence now seems odd. How did she know Daniel was
excellent when they had only met a few times? Moreover, her gaze was filled with admiration, but also sadness.

Before our wedding, they’d only met a handful of times, and I’d never spoken much about him in front of Penny.
Once, Daniel and I went home for a meal.
There was a plate of preserved plum spare ribs on the table, and when Penny brought it out, she placed it directly in front of Daniel.
At the time, I didn’t suspect anything and happily said to Daniel, “Penny is so biased, she made your favorite preserved plum spare ribs just for you.”
Later on, Penny, who was quite idle at home, suddenly got the idea to start a business, and Daniel, seemingly without meaning to, brought it up.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it, assuming it was just Daniel showing concern for his mother–in-law.
I had a good relationship with Penny.
The first time I met her, she was standing shyly beside my father, smiling.
She hardly spoke, and my father once told me that her parents used to abuse her.
I felt sorry for her, so I often chatted with her and invited her to go shopping.
She grew very reliant on me as a daughter and would tell me everything.

I asked her if she had met any men there and suggested she try dating, since my father had passed away, and she was still young- she couldn’t remain single forever.
She shook her head, but the light in her eyes didn’t fool me.
A thought flashed through my mind, as if a beam of light had pierced through the darkness.
Thinking about this, I texted the company manager, and soon after, she sent me a file.
Looking at Penny’s resume, a theory I had was confirmed.
