Chapter 7
In the afternoon, I returned to the villa, lay on the soft bed, and drifted into a light sleep.
Suddenly, the sharp ring of my phone woke me up.
I picked it up and saw that it was a call from Daniel’s father, Gardner Hardy.
After some hesitation, I answered.
”
‘Jane, when are you coming to visit us?”
“Is there something you need?”
“No… nothing. Just come over for dinner. Penny will be here too. A family meal, it’ll be lively.”

I didn’t respond.
Gardner continued, “Jane, we’re family. Can’t we sit down and talk things through?”
“Fine, I’ll come.”
When I arrived at the door, I could smell the food.
I was about to open the door when it opened from the inside.

‘Jane, come on, dinner’s ready!” Gardner Hardy said, smiling warmly.
As I stood there in a daze, I saw Daniel and Penny walking out of the bedroom, one after the other.
Daniel had a cold expression, while Penny was smiling, trying to please.

I sat at the table, staring at the sumptuous dishes, but I had no appetite.
Gardner Hardy sat at the head of the table, staring coldly at me.
“I heard you two are getting a divorce?”
I looked down at my phone, silent. Gardner Hardy continued, “It’s just a small thing, why get divorced over it? You’re not kids anymore. Just live a peaceful life.”
“He cheated on me!”
I looked at Gardner Hardy coldly.
“All men make mistakes from time to time. It’s not a big deal. You’ve been together for so many years, try to understand. Daniel’s under a lot of pressure, and sometimes he

needs to release his emotions.”
“Is this a small thing? He cheated on me! He has a child with another woman!”
Just as the argument was about to escalate, Daniel’s mother, Nancy Currey, came out to mediate.
“Let’s eat first, and talk after.”
While setting the table, Nancy Currey called for Penny.
Penny, hearing her name, came out of the kitchen with a cup of hot milk.
“Jane, don’t drink alcohol, have this instead.”
“Mm, I’ll use the restroom first.”
I went to the bathroom, locked the door, and

opened my phone.
I pulled up the kitchen’s surveillance footage, and sure enough, a few minutes ago, Penny had added something to the milk.
It suddenly hit me–she had bought something from the pharmacy the other day.
In the living room, they gathered together, whispering to each other.
Gardner Hardy listened while nodding, occasionally glancing in my direction.
Penny gently rubbed her belly, seemingly talking about something happy.
Suddenly, Daniel said something that made everyone’s faces turn serious.
Penny followed with another comment, and

all eyes shifted to the cup of hot milk on the table.
The air grew still for a few seconds.
Gardner Hardy made an “OK” gesture with his hand, and they dispersed, sitting down in their respective places.
Just then, Gardner Hardy’s voice came from the living room.
“Jane, are you feeling unwell? Why haven’t you come out yet?”
On the monitor, they exchanged glances, their faces filled with smugness.
A chill ran through me.
The next moment, I opened the door and stepped out.

Gardner Hardy eagerly approached me, leading me to a seat with drinks, then turned to sit across from me.
“Go ahead and eat! It’s getting cold.”
Gardner Hardy called out, and everyone picked up their chopsticks.
I looked at the table; the food was lavish- there was caviar, foie gras, and a bottle of Lafite wine.
The other four had glasses of red wine, while I only had a cup of hot milk in front of me.
I stood up, went to the kitchen, grabbed a new glass, and poured myself some red wine.
Penny had been watching my reaction

closely and could no longer stay still. She hurriedly tried to stop me.
“Jane, you should really not drink wine right now.”
I looked up at her and asked, “Why?”
“Oh, because it’s not suitable for you right now!”
“You’re drinking wine while pregnant, so why can’t I have some?”
Everyone froze in surprise.
