Chapter 14
I stared at him dumbstruck, 1 saw the concern in his face and squinted my eyes in confusion. If this was four years ago. I would have fallen to my knees and been swayed by his charms, but he was four years too late.
1 let out a snicker. “what do you think you’re doing?”
His gaze softened, as he was clearly taken back my tone.
I tilted my head to the side, raising a brow, “is this supposed to be a tactic to get me in bed? Is this something your Ella gets swooned by?” I looked down at his hand around my waist, my boobs pressed against his bare chest, before looking back up to meet his gaze, “if you don’t get those filthy hands off of me, I won’t hesitate to get you arrested for assault right away.”
He stared at me first and then took a step back, “you really aren’t the Leah from back then,” he lowered himself to pick up the first aid kit, he resumed cleaning his wound, “I overheard the security man on the phone saying he’d seen you arrive, and he’s on standby.”
I furrowed my eyebrows, “so he’s taking orders from someone.” I folded my hands across my chest.
He slipped a bandage over the stitched wound, briefly glancing my way and then nodding, “do you have any enemies, anyone that might want you dead?”
I raised a brow, “the police asked me this exact question last week.”
“And?” He went towards a small box that was next to the door, opening it and pulling two of his shirts out.
He turned his head my way, waiting for my response.
“I told them I wasn’t sure, the only people I know that actively disliked me, was your family.”
“Why would we want you dead, we didn’t even know you still existed on earth.”
“I have nothing to say to you, for all I know, you could be the killer,” I clicked my tongue, stretching a hand out, “is there a towel there! I need to dry off
“Would I risk my life to save you if I was after your life?” He walked to me, giving me one of the shirts he had pulled out of
his box.
“I wouldn’t be able to tell,” I told him.
“Where I come from people don’t work like that, I’m barely healed, and I can’t even get a thank you,” he snorted, slipping the other shirt on.
“Exactly, so why are you back here?” I placed the shirt he’d given me, on the bed, “shouldn’t you wait until your wound is fully healed? And besides, I did leave a blank check, my company hasn’t heard from your family, that is my thank you.”
“Business always comes first, I couldn’t miss the shareholders meeting for anything.”
“Of course,” I nodded, remembering how important it had been to him. Business always came before our marriage, before me, of course, he’d choose it over his health.
I headed for the door but his hand stopped me, my back against his chest, “where are you going?” He asked in a commanding tone.
“To get my phone,” I snatched my hand from his grip, a frowned etched on my face, and I’m not going to warn you again
not to touch me.”
I attempted to move again but he held my hand, turning me around to face him, “I told you, you can’t use your phone, you

don’t know what they’re capable of, what if they track you here and-”
I pulled away from him, irritated, my jaw clenching in anger. I was so used to having people not telling me what to do that it sting my chest to stand here and listen to him.
“Leah, he called as I walked out of the door but I ignored him.
The rain had reduced to drizzled by now but showed no signs of stopping. I walked to where he’d parked the car.
I opened the car and picked my phone from the backseat. I turned it on and was greeted with a million messages from Max. I immediately dialed him
I pressed the phone to my ear and regretted the decision, wincing as he shouted in my ear, “where on earth did that bastard take you? I’ve been trying to track you down, I was just on my way to the cops and-”
“Relax,” I cut him off, almost rolling my eyes, Tm fine, I called to know if you were able to leave the shareholders meeting safely.”
I did, it seems whoever was here to attack you noticed that the security had caught on, so he escaped but the team is already trailing him down, and I’ve been dead worried about you, and where that bastard could have taken you to.”
I’m fine here, please just head home and stay with Helen, I won’t be fine until I know you’re with her.”
“Leah, we can’t trust anyone right now-
Just do as I say, please,” I said, relieved he was fine, “I’m okay here, I’ll be home safely okay?”
There was a long pause and I just knew he was filled with a lot of doubt but then he finally spoke, “okay, I’ll take your word
for it
I nodded like he could see me before dropping the phone, turning it off and heading back into the shed.
I was surprised to see Neil laid on the floor. Startled, I stopped in place.
“Neil?” I called with concern, “Goodness help me you die in here,” I lowered myself to check if he was breathing, putting my index finger beneath his nose when I felt the slight breaths coming from him.
I realized he’d left the small bed for me. I rolled my eyes as I reluctantly placed the only pillow below his head. He was probably exhausted from all that chaos, I had no idea why he was doing any of this when the last thing he cared about was me. I slipped into the shirt he’d given me and soon found myself dozing off
I woke up to small groaning sounds and winced.
“Neil, what are you doing?” I mumbled through my sleep.
I sat up when his groanings didn’t stop. My eyes flickered to him and he seemed to still be asleep. I hopped down from the bed, immediately shaking him, “Neill”
His eyes snapped open but there was something lifeless about them. He began to look around frantically, beads of sweat coating his forehead.
He sat up sharply, taking loud, panicked gasps.
“Neil I called, my brows pulled together in confusion.
“I have to get out of here, I need to get out of here,” he said through his panic, jumping to his feet. I hurried after him.
“I have to get out of here,” he said, trying to reach for the door.

I stopped in front of him, “Neil, can you hear me?”
“There’s no way out, his breathing quickened. Tm trapped, the door.. I need the door.”
My hands reached up to cup his face, I shook him slightly, my voice soft and filled with concern. “I’m right here, you’re okay, it’s okay,”
His eyes peeled away from the door and finally focused on me and then they softened. His breathing normalised and he dropped his head to my shoulder, breathing in relief.
I wrapped my hand around him, patting his back softly. Tm right here.”
