I stared around the room for a while, when he had said coming to an island to experience firsthand the lives of the people lwing here, Ididn’t think he meant we’d actually be sleeping in a literal slum.
As I looked around, most of the people here were elites, leaders of some of the largest tech and brand companies, individuals who owned major shares in almost every industry. Yet here they were, forced to live like this. I could see the look of disgust etched on their faces, some lookes as if they were on the verge of throwing up. I hit back my laughter, sighing as I glanced at the bags 1 had brought with me
After such a long drive. I had imagined I’d finally be able to relax on a nice, soft bed. But here we were. What could I do? “Oh well whatever,” I muttered under my breath, starting to head into the room so I could rest.
I noticed Neil immediately following behind me. “What are you doing?” He asked, frowning as he reached for my hand.
“Going to sleep. What else?” I pulled tree from his grip instantly, and can you stop grabbing me?!”
“You don’t mind staying here?” His eyes roamed the room, and even though his face had no expressions like I was used to, but I could still easily see that he was just as disgusted as the others
“I mean, what choice do we even have?” I shrugged, already tired.
I selected a bed on the far end of the room while others murmured about whether they’d settle in or not. Plopping onto the bed. I prepared to change out of my dress. 1 lifted the hem of my dress to pull it over my head when Neil suddenly yelled. startling me.
“What are you doing?” he demanded, rushing toward me.
“Taking my dress off so I can change into my pajamas and sleep,” I replied, raising an eyebrow,
His face flushed as he shook his head at me. “What? Here? With all these people around?”
I looked around in confusion. “What’s gotten into you? Everyone here has seen someone in a bikini before. It’s no big deal.”
As I began pulling my dress again, he shouted, “No, please don’t do that.” He stood in front of me like he was done shield.
“Listen,” he said firmly. “Let’s get your pajamas. I’ll find you a place to change.”
“You’re insane-
“Please!” He raised his voice a little and at my glare, he spoke into a softer tone, “please.”
Annoyed but too tired to argue. I rummaged through my bag for my pajamas. He grabbed my wrist, leading me outside without another word.
When we stopped in a quiet spot, surrounded by multiple palm trees, he looked left, right, and all around. “Here. There’s no one. You can change now.”
1 I sighed, rolling my eyes. “What has gotten into you?”
Just do it, he urged
I wrapped my arms around myself, “it’s so fucking cold out here.”
“It’s the ocean breeze, so hurry up so we can head back in on time.”
“Well are you going to keep staring, or does the rule of me not changing in front of other people, not apply to you?

He tucked his hands in his pocket and turned around, his back to me..
I rolled my eyes, slipping my dress off, shivering as the goosebumps coated my half naked skin.
“Unbelievable” 1 muttered. “I’m done.” I said a moment later, and he turned back to face me.
“Good,” he replied. He led me back to the room, where I finally collapsed onto the bed.
The mattress, if it could even be called that, was nothing more than a wooden plank. I could hear the others grumbling. under their breath, their frustration was piercing my head. But no one dared complain outright, he was too important a client for anyone to risk it.
Neil took the bed next to mine. He didn’t bother changing into proper sleepwear, he simply took off his suit, unbuttoned a few buttons of his shirt, and rolled up his sleeves.

I can’t believe there isn’t even a bathroom here to clean up, I muttered, turning away from him. I lay on my side, staring around the room as some people started to settle in while others tried to figure out ways to make their situation more comfortable.
My thoughts immediately wandered to Helen. My chest tightened, longing to be with her. If I could, I would’ve brought her

I reached into my bag, pulled out my phone, and quietly slipped out of the room. I could feel a few curious gazes following me, but I didn’t care.
Once outside. I dialed her and set the call to video. When her face appeared on the screen, my heart swelled with love.
“Hi, my beautiful baby,” I said softly.
“Hi. Mommy! How is it there? Are you okay? Is it cold?”
I’m fine, sweetheart. Is everything okay back home?”
“Yes, Mommy. I just ate banana pudding, and I’m about to go to bed. She dropped the phone as she attempted to show me her meal, and groaned before picking it up and fixing it properly.
That’s good, love. Make sure you sleep early, okay?” I squinted my eyes, as the breeze three my hair all over the place.
“Yes, Mom. I’m already in my bedroom, see?” She tilted the camera to show me her familiar, cozy room.
“That’s great, honey. Be good to Max and everyone, alright? Listen to them, I’ll be back really really soon, and I will stay at home for a long time, I thought at this point I definitely needed a break.
“I will. Mommy. Thank you. I hope you have fun too! Smile a lot, okay?”
