Snapping back to reality, I said flatly, “My parents are still resting. Take your things back. I won’t accept them.”
Sheldon seemed unconcerned. He looked
at me steadfastly and insisted.
“Whether you accept them or not, I’m still going to give them to you.”
“Nora, don’t be angry. I’m willing to apologize for all my past mistakes.”
“If you still can’t forgive me now, then I’ll start pursuing you again.”
“We’ve been together for eight years. No one knows each other better than we do. I can’t believe we‘ 11 just part ways so easily. I …

I held up a hand to cut him off.
“Okay, Sheldon. That’s enough.”
“You know it as well as I do. We’re the

closest people in the world, but you’ve hurt me more than anyone.”
“Did you ever consider my feelings when you hurt me?”
Water spilled could not be retrieved and no matter how well you mend a broken. mirror, cracks would always remain.
Sheldon hung his head like a withered plant, muttering, “Nora, I’m sorry.”
I waved him off, dismissing him.
“Sorry isn’t enough. I won’t accept your apology.”
“Just leave. I don’t want my parents to see you.”
After saying that, I threw the breakfast he brought into the trash can in front of him.
Sheldon looked at me with red–rimmed
eyes. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out.
I thought my firm stance would make him

give up.
But to my surprise, I saw him even more frequently.
He began to bring breakfast over every morning, even though I would eventually throw it in the trash.
In the evenings after work, Sheldon would wait at the entrance of my company.
He stood there holding a bouquet of fiery red roses, his gaze fixed intently on me, insisting he would drive me home.
I pretended not to notice and hailed a cab.
Sheldon followed behind in his car at a
leisurely pace.
When I got home, I finally couldn’t help but
ask.
“Sheldon, stop following me around all day. Don’t you need to work?”
He gave a sheepish grin and explained.
“I took leave from the company.”

“You are a woman and I am worried about you getting off work late at night.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t bother you. I just want to make sure you get home safely.”
I let out a long sigh of relief.
Back in my hometown, my work days often ran late.
I’d have to walk down a long, dark and quiet street before reaching the subway station.
What was Sheldon doing back then?
He knew Winter was just starting her career and didn’t have much money.
To save her transportation costs, he played the role of a gallant protector every night, driving a long way to take her home.
“Nora, would you accept my roses?”
Sheldon persisted, holding the flower in front of me.

aside.
“I’m not a fan of roses.”
Hearing this, Sheldon scratched his head in slight embarrassment and apologized.
“Oh? I thought all girls liked roses.”
Sheldon was a polytechnic man who didn’t know much about romance.
In our eight years together, he’d never once given me flowers.
Oh, wait. I almost forgot.
He did give someone else flowers.
It was on Winter’s birthday this year.
Sheldon had bought out all the roses in the city for her.
Since she didn’t have many friends there, he arranged for the entire company to celebrate her birthday.
Drones showered them with roses, creating

a sea of flowers in the sky.
Sheldon pushed a massive cake toward her and a romantic shower of roses
surrounded them.
