Chapter 7
As soon as we stepped out of the county courthouse, Laura approached us.
She shot me a vicious glare and then linked her arm with Zach’s. “Zach, your mom wants us to apply for a marriage license today. Let’s go now.”
Zach looked at me, unmoving for a long
moment.
Laura snarled, “Nora, now that you and Zach are divorced, don’t contact each other anymore. If I catch you trying to seduce Zach in the future, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Before I could respond, Zach shook off Laura’s arm. “Who gave you the right to speak to Nora like that? I told you that I won’t marry you. I only love Nora!”
“Zach, are you not going to take
responsibility for me and the baby? Are you even a man?”

Laura broke down crying, sitting on the ground and clutching Zach’s leg, acting like a spoiled child. “You jerk! You have no shame. You got me pregnant and won’t take responsibility! It’s all Nora’s fault! You seductress!”
The crowd of onlookers gathered again, chattering away.
“Laura, I won’t allow you to speak ill of Nora. You call her a seductress? Don’t
forget that you’re the one who broke up our marriage!”
I rolled my eyes and walked away faster.
The crowd fell silent for a moment and then erupted into even louder discussions.
I resubmitted my application to my previous company.
Instead of hearing from the company, my former boss contacted me.
“Did you finish having your baby? Wait–it’s only been six months, right.”

I replied, “I got divorced.”
He was silent for a moment and said, “Come to the office tomorrow. I want to see if your business skills have regressed.”
I was taken aback for a moment and then
jumped up with joy.
I went to the nearest mall with my bag. Because my figure had changed, I couldn’t fit into my old clothes. I had to pick out a
few outfits suitable for work.
Back home, I didn’t idle about. I started going through the materials I had researched again.
Finally, I went to bed with confidence.
Perhaps too excited, I tossed and turned for a long time without falling asleep.
I still remembered that I was also nervous and excited when I just graduated six years
ago.
At that time, Zach teased me for being
unambitious, but now, I was on my own.

I patted my face and said to myself, “Nora, why are you thinking of him again?”
I needed to dive into high–intensity work as soon as possible to forget him.
I had some experience, after all, so it didn’t take long for me to catch up with the company’s pace after returning.
I worked hard every day and socialized or relaxed after work, living a fulfilling life on my own.
It turned out that living alone was also good.
Apart from working hours, the rest of the time was my own. I was much freer than before.
Perhaps because I often hung out with young people, I gradually felt that I had become young and energetic.
I went hiking, picnicking, gaming, and dancing with them. We cried and laughed together.

I gradually forgot about Zach and Laura.
Half a year later, I was in the kitchen preparing ingredients, planning to enjoy a big meal and TV series on this cold night.
But then I saw Zach downstairs through the window.
To be honest, I wasn’t surprised that he could find me here.
Zach’s family, although not a top–notch wealthy family, was one of the leading families in our city, with considerable connections.
We locked eyes, and he waved at me.
I ignored him and continued to prepare the ingredients.
Snowflakes suddenly began to fall outside. the window.
I saw Zach downstairs occasionally stomping his feet or blowing on his hands to warm him up.

After thinking for a long time, I still put on my coat and went downstairs.
I didn’t care about him. I was just afraid he would freeze to death downstairs at my house. That would be too creepy!
Zach’s eyes lit up when he saw me, and he ran towards me.
“What’s the matter?” My tone was cold.
He tried to hold my hand, but I stepped back. “If you have something to say, just say it. You’re a married man now. Don’t do these things.”
His expression turned gloomy. He dropped his hand and said, “Laura is about to give birth.”
“Well, congratulations?”
Seeing that I didn’t say anything else, nor did I have any other expressions, he continued, “After she has the baby, I will divorce her. We’ve been married for so
long, but I’ve never share the same bed

with her. If it weren’t for my mother forcing me to marry her, I wouldn’t…”
I interrupted his nagging, “Stop! You don’t need to report this to me. This is between you and Laura. It has nothing to do with
me.”
His eyes turned red. “Nora, do you really not have me in your heart at all? I don’t believe you can be so ruthless. I can’t believe you can let go of our 10–year relationship so quickly. Nora, I don’t mean anything else. I just want to tell you that I have always loved only you. In my heart, you are my only wife.
“If you don’t want to have children, we won’t have any in the future. If you don’t want to see Laura’s child, I will let her live in another house… I have cut off relationships with other women. Could you come back? I really can’t live without you.”
I shook my head. “I used to see you as my everything, thinking I couldn’t live without you. But in these six months, I’ve found

that I can live alone without you, and even
better.
“Zach, we can’t go back to the past. You should learn to let go of the past. Since you married Laura, live a good life with her. Don’t come to see me again.”
With that, I went upstairs directly without even looking at his expression.
That night, Zach stood outside my door for a long time.
After that, I never saw him again.
