The hospital was across from Carter Tower. Once I could walk, I visited the office to pick up my credit card.
His love was gone, but his money? I’d still use it.
I heard a familiar car engine behind me as I passed the building.
On impulse, I glanced back.
Inside the car, a woman leaned against Gavin’s shoulder, her movements casual and
intimate.
I recognized her.
Her face had been on his phone before–Gavin’s new assistant, Savanna Harlow.
The sight of her hit me like a wave of cold seawater. I turned back and continued walking
to the hospital before the bitterness could overwhelm me.
Not long after, someone knocked on my door
The nurse who always called me “sweetheart” entered, looking uncomfortable.
“Sweetheart, your caregiver… she said…”
Another figure stepped in before she could finish: the caregiver I’d hired at a high price.
“Ms. Stanton, I’m so sorry.” Her tone was apologetic, but her resolve was firm. “Someone
offered me a higher rate. I can’t work for you anymore.”
“I’ll pay ten times as much,” I replied, my voice as cold as ice.
But she shook her head. “It’s not about the money. It’s–well, Mrs. Carter just got
discharged and needs a caregiver, too. I’m sorry.”
Of course. Savanna didn’t just steal my husband–she took everything else, too.
