Chapter 10
I was honestly getting tired of their constant interference, looking down at the father and son with growing
annoyance.
“That was in the past. What did I gain from loving him back then? Telling me there was no one left in the fire after he was rescued? Saying I should die while I was sitting in the hospital room with him? A son like that? You can keep him!”
I picked up my phone. “The two of you, stop bothering me. I won’t let you hurt me again! Get out of here, or I’ll call the cops!”
The father and son left, defeated.
Later, I heard from a former neighbor that Victor had voluntarily reported his mistake of leaving the fire scene before everyone was rescued, resulting in his demotion and reassignment to a different post.
Theo transferred schools to follow him.
Before they left, they sent me a message.
Victor texted: [We’ll atone for our mistakes. Give us another chance. We’ll love you properly.]
I pretended I didn’t see it and went on with my life.
Through a friend’s introduction, I met a new man.
He had a tough, intimidating look, but was shy and sweet once you got to know him.
After a few meetings, I agreed to give it a shot.
He hesitantly promised me, “When we get married, I won’t say I’m helping you with the kid. He’s mine too, so looking after him is my responsibility. And the housework–don’t worry about it. It’s not just your home. It’s ours.”
To be honest, I wasn’t totally convinced, but if he couldn’t keep his word, that was fine.
I was used to moving on by now.
One night, as we lay together, he gently touched the scars on my body. This nearly six–foot–three man, who

looked like he could tear a door off its hinges, nearly started crying.
“Baby, does it hurt?”
I held him, soothing him, and telling him it was all in the past.
A year later, I gave birth to a beautiful daughter..
My husband kept his promise–he helped with the kid, and took care of the house, and I no longer had to carry the weight of everything alone.
Life was peaceful. I wasn’t worn out from taking care of Theo, and I didn’t have to stress over making things perfect for my husband either.
As the years went by, I looked younger and more vibrant.
One day, I was walking my daughter to preschool when someone called out to me.
“Mom, who is this?”
I turned around and saw Theo, looking a lot darker

and taller than the last time I saw him, his face filled with shock as he looked at my daughter, who was holding my hand.
“This is my daughter. Is there something wrong?”
“Y–You… you’re married? And you have another child now?”
He choked up, standing there, completely at a loss. It was like he never expected this.
Behind him, a man was rushing toward us, holding a bouquet of flowers.
It was a much older–looking Victor.
He knelt down in front of me. “Nia, I’ve been reassigned. Please, marry me again. This time, I’ll be good to you. Please, give me another chance.”
I frowned deeply.
Before I could reject him, my burly husband rushed forward, grabbing Victor by the collar.
“So, you’re the guy who left my wife in the fire? And
this kid–the one who told mywife to die and wanted your mistress to be his new mom??“He sneered. “Listen, Nia is my wife now, the mother of fimy daughter. You can forget about her. If you try anything, beat you to the ground.”
I quickly stepped in between them.
“Alright, alright, no need to get violent.”
The father and son looked at each other almost expectantly, waiting for me to say something more.
Butt Bjjust glanced at them, holding my husband’s hand with one hand, and my daughter’s hand witthtthe other, as l turned away without a second glance..
“Why bother with these people? They don’t matter.”
Exactly..
They didn’t matter anymore.
Those rotting memories? If they wanted to look at them, they were welcometto.
I had moved omto abbatter future.
