Chapter 5
Theo and Celeste were hugging each other, and Theo looked at me like I was the villain.
I felt a dull ache in my chest.
When Theo was little, he used to say he’d protect me when he grew up.
But now that he was older, the mom he wanted wasn’t me.
Thinking of that, I felt that all the love and effort I’d put into him was wasted.
“You might be confused about something,” I said coldly.
“I’m getting a divorce. We’re not a couple anymore. This is MY house. Without my permission, none of you have the right to stay here.”
I pulled out the divorce papers, already signed with my
name.
Victor’s face faltered. “You’re really divorcing me over something so trivial?”
“Trivial? Maybe it seems trivial to you. After all, you weren’t the one left to die in a fire, were you? Of course, it doesn’t matter to you. Now, get out. All of you. This is my house, and you’re not welcome here!”
I slammed my hand on the dining table.
Victor froze for a moment, his face darkening.
“Fine, you want a divorce? We’ll divorce. I know this is just your little tactic, but I can’t stand being threatened. You’ll regret it.”
He signed the divorce papers with a flourish, then wrapped his arm around Celeste’s waist, and gave me a look as if to challenge me.
The officer, watching all of this, seemed to be getting a little exasperated.
“Sir, can you please take your friend and your son, and leave this lady’s house now?”

Victor scoffed.
“Cece, Theo, let’s go!”
The three of them strutted out like they owned the place.
I wasn’t going to get caught up in their mess, and I didn’t even bother asking for the money for the damages they caused.
It took me three hours to clean up.
Once I saw my home looking neat again, I finally collapsed onto my bed, exhausted.
That nap was the first real rest I’d had in a while.
I didn’t wake up until late in the afternoon, and when I did, I noticed a bunch of missed calls on my phone.
They were all from Theo.
I raised an eyebrow. After seeing Celeste feed him those greasy chicken tenders yesterday, I guessed his stomach was acting up again.

I dialed his number, and sure enough, he sounded sick.
“I’m sick. Can you take me to the hospital?”
“Why are you calling me? Aren’t you with Cece? Why don’t you ask her?”
Theo went quiet on the other end.
I didn’t say anything either.
Celeste’s personality might appeal to kids, but she was no more capable of taking care of others than she was of taking care of herself.
Theo’s stomach had always been weak, even though I tried everything to help him. He’d still end up with stomach issues and sometimes even a stomach flu.
Even I, his real mother, had trouble handling him sometimes. So, what chance did Celeste have?
“Cece told me to take medicine, but I don’t know what to take.”
Theo said after a pause, “I remember you always used to take me to the hospital.”
