Chapter 8
I still went to work every day as usual.
One day, I took a girl from my class, whose family was going through some tough times, to the school cafeteria for lunch. I carefully helped her with her meal and chatted with her. When I looked up, I saw Theo staring at us, his eyes red.
The little girl sitting next to me seemed a little uneasy as if she wanted to get up and move, but I stopped her.
“It’s fine. Just eat. Don’t worry about him.”
“But-”
“If you feel uncomfortable, you can go sit somewhere else, but if it’s because of him, I don’t think that’s necessary.”
She nodded quickly, casting a quick glance at Theo before bowing her head to continue eating.
I completely ignored him.

Theo didn’t say a word but kept his gaze fixed on my hand as I helped the girl with her food.
After standing there for five minutes, his face grew paler, and he suddenly collapsed.
When he opened his eyes again, I was sitting by his side.
Theo didn’t have time to feel relieved before he heard the doctor scolding me.
“How could you be a mother? The child has a sensitive stomach, and yet you let him eat junk food! Now he’s running a 102.2°F fever, and you’re not worried at all?”
Theo touched his forehead.
Sure enough, it was burning hot.
So, it was a fever. He thought he was about to die.
Maybe I really did care about him after all, otherwise, why would I be there?
He smiled to himself.

But I just spoke coldly, “I’m not his mother. I’m just a teacher at this school. I’ll contact his parents.”
When Victor found out about Theo’s situation, he finally took a break from work and came to the hospital. When he saw me standing outside the room, his expression was complicated.
“Thanks.”
“I’d help anyone, even a stranger who passed out in front of me.”
I turned to leave, but Victor, for some reason, decided to block my way.
“How have you been lately? And about your injury… did it leave a scar? I know a few dermatologists. Would you like

I cut him off. “No, thank you. And I don’t think we need small talk. Do you understand what I mean?”
Victor froze for a moment.
After a long pause, he spoke again, his voice hesitant,
“I see…”
He was silent for a while before continuing, “I’m really sorry for what happened. Honestly, there’s no love left between me and Cece. But I don’t know why… I always thought she had been pampered for so long, and I wanted to take care of her more. I ignored you.”
He looked at Theo, lying in the bed, and then added, “I also ignored Theo. After you left, I often felt like home wasn’t home anymore. I didn’t want to go back. Darling, I was wrong.”
Listening to him, I found memories of the past come flooding back.
I used to carefully prepare dinner after work and keep the house spotless.
Victor was busy with his job, so I even learned how to give him massages just to make him relax.
But what about me?

Whether it was Victor or Theo, they only longed for the life I used to provide for them–caring and nurturing.

I smiled and gave my ex–husband, who I had been married to for seven years, some advice.
“You just need a maid.”
