I was surprised.
I never expected him to throw me a birthday party and invite all my colleagues.
“Happy birthday to our little princess. May you have many happy returns of the day, year after year.”
After saying this, he handed me a rather large gift box.
“Why don’t you open it?”
I opened it, and inside was a stuffed animal wearing a bow that kept meowing at me nonstop.
It melted my heart completely.
“I know you’ve been hung up on Whiskers‘ departure, but that wasn’t your fault, Scarlett. I want you to be happy.”
I thought I had hidden it well, but Brent saw right through me. Just as tears welled up in my eyes, he handed me a property deed.
“Scarlett, from now on, one of the countless lights in this city belongs to you.”
The money Mom left me was actually enough to buy a house, but I never had time to look at properties and kept putting it off.
“This is too expensive. I can’t accept it.”
Later, I tried to transfer the money to Brent, but he refused to take it no matter what, saying it was to repay the kindness my father had shown him years ago.

Another hot summer passed, and Brent and I got together.He understands me, respects me, and takes care of me. When I’m with him, I don’t have to walk on eggshells or treat his love as a gift.
