Chapter 4
“Add me, and I’ll transfer the money to you.”
Ulric shamelessly asked for my contact information again.
“Fine, but if the amount’s less than we agreed on, I’ll remove you.”
I added him, and without another word, he sent me the transfer.
Fifty–two thousand. It was more than the hush money my brother had given me.
“Are you happy now? Where are you headed? Let me give you a ride,” Ulric said as he stepped out of the car and opened the door for me like a gentleman.

I wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries. “The internet café.”
At the internet café, I set up at a station, opened the social app, and messaged my online friend.
“How’s it going?”
No reply.
It should’ve been fine.
I remembered meeting this friend through a book–a coincidence, really.
The way he spoke was captivating. No matter what topic I brought up, he always seemed to have something interesting to
say.
“What are you reading?” Ulric asked, sitting

next to me with two cups of cola.
“Nothing much.”
After a few rounds of games at the café, Ulric drove me back to the dorm.
As I got out of the car, something flickered in the distance, but when I looked, there was only darkness.
A week later, I received a message from my homeroom teacher.
She asked me to meet her at the street corner at 8 PM. Apparently, my father had asked her to give me something.
I was confused. What could my father, who was abroad, want to send me?
I waited, but instead of my teacher, a

lecherous middle–aged man approached me.
“Are you Annie?” he asked, reeking of alcohol as he got closer.
I took a step back. “You’ve got the wrong person!”
The man glanced at me. “Aren’t you wearing a white top and black jeans?”
“I’ve already bought you a bag, what else do you want? Just say it, and I’ll get it for you. Behave tonight, and I’ll give you whatever you want.”
His words sounded all too familiar.
“You really have the wrong person. If you don’t stop touching me, I’ll call the police.”
I warned him, but he just sneered. “When you

wanted the bag, you didn’t care about the ‘wrong person, did you, you filthy bitch? Go ahead, call the cops if you’ve got the guts.”
He grabbed my arm so hard it hurt.
I was about to kick him where it would hurt the most when suddenly someone rushed over and punched him.
The man winced in pain and let go of my arm. I turned around to find Ulric standing
there.
“Who the hell is this kid? Do you know who I am?” The man, clutching his face, glared at
- us.
Then, he forced a smile.
“Ulric, what are you doing here?”

Ulric coldly stared at him. “Go settle your wages with finance tomorrow.”
“Please, Ulric! This little girl’s been pestering me! She’s the one who wanted to meet me!” The man began to panic.
“She’s my girlfriend. What does she need from you? You think she wants more money than I’m giving her?” Ulric sneered, looking at him with disgust.
“I have the chat records, Ulric.” The man pulled out his phone, ready to show Ulric.
Ulric didn’t even glance at it. “If you’ve got a problem, take it to the police. Keep this petty stuff away from me, unless you want another punch.”
With that, Ulric grabbed my hand and pulled
me away.

After dropping me off at the school, he looked at me seriously and said, “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is for you to be out here alone?”
. “I know.”
“Then why are you out so late by yourself?”
“You were following me, right? What’s there to be afraid of?” I shot back.
Lately, Ulric had been “coincidentally” running into me. A few times, I even noticed him pretending to pass by nearby.
Although Ulric had seemed so serious a moment ago, now he looked a little nervous, his ears turning red.
“I wasn’t following you. We… we were just

meant to cross paths,” he said, his gaze shifting, not daring to look me in the eye.
Wait, this sounded strangely familiar.
Ulric actually seemed kind of cute?
“You should head back to the dorm. If you need to go out alone again, let me know–I’l| come with you. And don’t forget to accept my friend request.”
Throughout the walk, Ulric held my hand tightly. I couldn’t break free, and when we reached the dorm, he hurriedly drove off before I could even refuse.
Once I was inside, I accepted his friend request.
