Chapter 6
“Do you remember that girl, Dubel, who used to bully me in high school? She’s getting married.”
Kfir knew all about my embarrassing high school moments.
I stared at the calm surface of the river as the air suddenly grew still.
“I still remember one afternoon when I didn’t bring her lunch. She gathered a group of people to take turns slapping me. Gomer tried to defend me, but they cornered him and beat him up.”
I covered my face and sobbed.
The sky drizzled lightly, with the rain falling

alongside my tears.
Kfir stayed by my side in silence, offering me quiet comfort.
That day, Gomer was beaten so badly he had ⚫ to be hospitalized and got six stitches in his
head.
Dubel had warned us that this was the price. for blindly standing up for others.
Afterward, Gomer struggled with depression for a long time, which set back his studies by
years.
“I keep thinking… if I hadn’t been so weak back then, if I had been the one causing the harm, maybe things would be different now.”
I’d always told myself to pull myself together, because I thought if I didn’t, my life would be

ruined forever.
“But… none of this should have been her burden to carry.”
I pulled out my phone, only to realize the recording was still on.
“Sigh, it’s useless. No meaningful evidence. There’s no point in keeping it.”
I sighed deeply and turned off the phone.
Kfir encouraged me to learn to forgive myself.
“In that situation, no one could have come out unscathed. All we could do was accept it and learn from it because none of this was your fault.”
“If I hadn’t met Alpha Dulcea…”

“Beth, I was planning to keep this secret buried,” Kfir continued.
“Do you want revenge?” His eyes lit up with eager anticipation as he looked at me.
I froze for a moment, hardly believing my
ears.
“You have a way?” I asked, instinctively nodding.
“Do you still have Gomer’s contact info?” Kfir asked.
I shook my head.
After that incident, Gomer deleted all of us from her contacts.
Maybe that was the only way she could truly

move on from those painful memories.
“I’ve seen Gomer. Last year, she was hospitalized after a car accident, and I was the one who performed her surgery.”
“When I saw her, I was a little surprised–she had changed so much. She wasn’t the quiet girl from high school anymore. I didn’t want to pry too much, but I heard she’s now the lobby manager at a listed hotel. She has a car, a house… she’s doing well.”
“At the hospital, every surgery requires keeping the patient’s contact information. If you want to reach her, I can ask for her permission. Maybe I can help.”
I thought for a moment.
Her life seemed fine now. Would my sudden appearance just be a disturbance to her?

“Maybe not for now. But thanks, though.”
The rain began to fall harder as we exchanged brief goodbyes and headed home.
Despite everything, I was still drenched to the bone.
As I unlocked the door, I noticed a faint light glowing from inside.
My first thought was–could someone have broken into the house?!
I panicked and tried to shut the door quickly.
But just then, a hand reached out and caught the doorframe.
Another hand yanked me inside, and the

door slammed shut behind me.
I looked up and met the gaze of the person standing before me.
It was Alpha Dulcea.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief.
He was wearing black clothes, a black cap, and his presence was overwhelming.
My body trembled involuntarily.
Half of his face was in shadow, but his gaze was deep–almost unreadable.
“Where have you been? Why are you coming back so late?” He scanned me from head to toe.
“Look at you, all wet and bedraggled. You

really do look like a drowned little kitten.”
He grabbed a towel from the rack behind him and gently began to dry my soaked hair.
