Chapter4
“Hi.” My voice cracked as I squeaked out the word. “Hi,” I repeated, louder this time, though my nerves rattled.
“Elena? What do you need to talk about?” His tone was direct, almost demanding.
I swallowed hard. “I–I think we should meet. This can’t be said over the phone.”
There was a long pause. “Alright,” he finally said. “I’ll be back tomorrow. Where?”
I blinked, surprised by how easily he agreed. I hadn’t expected this.
I ran a hand through my hair. “Uh… my place?” I offered weakly, though I could tell Leila was stifling a laugh.

She shot me a look and mouthed café before nodding towards the door.
He chuckled lightly. “Fine. Two o’clock. Does that work?”
I nodded quickly, heart pounding. “Yeah, perfect.”
“See you then,” he said before hanging up.
I exhaled sharply, eyes closing as anxiety clenched my chest. Tomorrow. It had to be done.
Leila’s voice cut through my thoughts. “He sounds hot.”
I snapped my eyes open. “He is.”
I couldn’t help but remember how he looked

at me that night–powerful, magnetic. I’d been drawn to him instantly.
Leila smirked. “He thinks you’re after a repeat of that night.”
⚫ I groaned. “No. It’s not like that.”
She mimicked his voice dramatically, “My place,” before bursting into laughter.
“Not funny,” I muttered, but she was still laughing.
At the coffee bar
The words left my mouth before I could stop them. His smile faltered instantly, and his gaze turned cold.
“What?” he asked, voice flat.

“I’m pregnant.” I said it quickly, though each word felt like a weight.
His silence hit harder than anything. His eyes drilled into me, searching for something -anything–but all I saw was doubt.
“Are you sure it’s mine?” he asked, his tone sharper now.
I nodded, wiping my palms on my jeans, my nerves creeping in. “You’re the only one I’ve been with for months.”
He shook his head, his lips curling into a tight line. “It can’t be me.”
A cold sting cut through me as his disbelief settled in. He didn’t trust me.
“Look, I’m not asking for anything” I whispered, eyes avoiding his. “I just thought

you should know. Believe whatever you want.”
I turned to leave, my heart heavy, but his gaze followed me. He didn’t say anything, just stared as if I were something he couldn’t quite understand.
As I started to pay, I caught him inhaling sharply, his eyes scanning me in a way that made me uncomfortable. He stiffened, like he was sensing something he didn’t want to. Then, without warning, the coffee cup in his hand shattered, spilling dark liquid everywhere.
I jumped back, startled, as he stood up, his eyes burning with a fury I hadn’t seen before.
“Are you insane?” he hissed, his voice low and dangerous.

I stepped back, feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes on me. “I… I gotta go,” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
Without waiting for a response, I turned on ⚫ my heel, the door swinging open in front of
me as I dashed outside, heart pounding.
I fumbled with the car keys, my hands shaking as I finally unlocked the car and slammed the door shut. My heart pounded, racing as I looked back at the café.
Mark stood there, staring at me. His gaze was cold, piercing. I couldn’t breathe.
Without thinking, I floored the gas pedal, speeding away. The roar of the engine drowned out my thoughts, but all I could see was his face–his rejection. He didn’t believe me. He didn’t even flinch when he crushed

that cup in his hand.
I pulled into my driveway, my hands still trembling. Slamming the door behind me, I collapsed against it, trying to catch my breath.
