When Theodore spoke about Eva, my expression shifted slightly. Seeing this, his face brightened, and he pushed Eva toward me again. “Eva, this is your biological mother. Hurry up, call her ‘mommy, and let her kiss you.”
Eva stared at me for a long moment, then, without warning, spat at me with all her might. Her eyes were red as she glared at me like I was her enemy.
“You wicked woman!” she screamed. “Because of you, my father, Alpha Daniel, divorced my mother. My dad, Theodore, doesn’t want my mom anymore, and other kids call me a mutt! You ruined my mom’s life! I hate you! I’ll never forgive you, even if you drag me here. When I grow up, I’ll kill you

to avenge my mom!”
Although I had braced myself for the worst, a sharp pain surged through my chest. Maybe this was what it felt like to have a weakness as a mother.
Theodore’s expression morphed into one of shock. He slapped Eva across the backside. “How dare you speak to your mother like that?” he shouted. “Do you know how much your mom loves you?”
Eva burst into tears, wailing, “Daddy
Theodore hit me! Daddy Theodore is biased toward that bad woman! I don’t want her to be my mom. I want my real mom!”
My emotions were a tangled mess of confusion and sadness.
Furious, Theodore raised his hand to strike

her again, but I stopped him. “That’s enough, Theodore. Is it fun playing pretend in front of me?”
Theodore froze, panic flashing across his face. He quickly turned to me, his voice shaky as he tried to explain. “Amber, it’s not me who taught Eva to say that. It was Camelia who corrupted her.”
He promised, his voice pleading. “Don’t worry. I’ll teach her properly from now on. I’ll make sure something like this never happens again.”
I sighed deeply, replying calmly, “Theodore, have you ever heard the saying, ‘Those who start it are the ones who will face the consequences‘? Camelia may be a cruel woman, but she must have been so nice and loving toward Eva. Otherwise, she wouldn’t protect her like this.”

“Even the child knows who treats her well, and she returns that kindness. I devoted myself to you for five years, taking care of food, clothing, and everything else. Yet, how did you treat me?” I asked, my voice steady but tinged with hurt.
“I gave you chances, didn’t I?” I pressed. “That night, when I asked you whose child Eva is, what did you tell me? Compared to Camelia, aren’t you more despicable?”
“Honestly, what did the child do wrong? The fault lies with us adults, and my biggest mistake was marrying you.” Theodore froze, as if struck by a heavy blow. But I didn’t look at him anymore. Instead, I pulled out a tissue and knelt down to wipe Eva’s tears.
I gently coaxed her, “There, there. If you keep crying, you’ll look less pretty”

“Are you really my mom?” Eva asked, her voice soft but full of uncertainty.
I could see from her innocent eyes that, even as she asked, there was still a trace of wariness and resistance inside her.
