An hour later, Trevor arrived at Samuel’s home with Cassandra. She saw Eric as she walked in. There were more streaks of white in his hair; in just a few days, Eric had aged considerably. “You’re here. He just woke up and is staying in your old room. Go on up.”
Cassandra nodded and pulled Trevor along as they headed upstairs. The moment they entered the room, they heard Samuel’s voice. “I told you, unless Cassie comes, I won’t eat.”
Cassandra frowned. “Samuel, when did you become so childish? Who are you trying to scare with a hunger strike?“}
Samuel’s eyes lit up when he heard Cassandra’s voice, but his face immediately fell when he saw Trevor behind Cassandra. “Why is he here?”
Cassandra didn’t indulge him. “He is my husband. If I’m meeting another man in the middle of the night, of course, my husband should be with me. Samuel, if it weren’t for my husband’s generosity in letting me come, I wouldn’t be here at all.”
Trevor defended her in front of others and she would do the same for him. Samuel felt a sharp pain in his chest as if a piece of his heart had been torn away. “Cassie, do we really have to make things so difficult between us?”
Cassandra was tired of hearing these words. “Samuel, I didn’t come here to reminisce. I’m here because the Nolans once took me in, and this is the last time I’ll see you. After today, I have nothing to do with the Nolans anymore.“}
