Chapter5
After meeting Goden, Dad made an excuse to keep me at home.
I reluctantly saw Goden off, and when I got back home, I found Dad sitting on the living – room couch, waiting for me.
He looked at me seriously and said, “Emelia, I don’t approve of your relationship with him.” Dad had always doted on me, and this was the first time he had so firmly opposed my choice.
“Dad, why?” I asked, puzzled.
“Emelia, trust me. I’ve met so many people in my life. I have experience. He’s not the right one for you!”

“Dad, is it because he’s poor? But he’s really working so hard, I pleaded.
“No, Emelia. I don’t want to hurt you, but that man has bad intentions. I’m afraid you’ll get hurt,” Dad said earnestly.
“But Dad, he’s the only man I’ve loved in all these years. Seeing him makes me feel so at ease,” I said, my voice tinged with desperation.
“Don’t you like Nicola anymore?”
Dad suddenly asked. “When you were little, you always followed him around, asking him to marry you when you grew up.”
Nicola. He was my childhood neighbor, my childhood sweetheart.
Our families had similar social statuses,

and Dad and his father were good business partners.
When I was young, if Dad was too busy to come home for days, I would stay at Nicola’s house.
I still remember how gentle Nicola’s mom
was.
Unfortunately, ten years ago, something happened to his family.
Nicola’s father passed away, and his mother was severely injured in a car accident.
Nicola had to take his mother abroad for treatment and to manage the family business.
He never came back to our country since then.

Our relationship, which was once so close, turned into just sending holiday greetings to each other.
“Dad, that’s different,
“I was just a kid then. I didn’t know what love
was.”
Seeing my determination, Dad sighed.
“Emelia, you’re old enough to make your own decisions. But I hope you’ll be more serious about marriage. I can’t just hand my daughter over to a man who can’t even guarantee his own livelihood. If you’re really set on him, let him prove himself to me.”
After that, Dad provided Goden with a start- up fund.
