Chapter 7
I grabbed his phone and played the voice message.
A soft female voice, sounding teary, said, “Gary, my heart doesn’t feel right today. My parents are at Grandma’s. Can you take me to the hospital?”
I raised his phone and looked up at him.
There was a long silence.
He suddenly said in a low voice, “If you ask me to stay, I will.”
I wiped away my tears and calmly said, “Go ahead. You disgust me.”

look.
“Ellie, give me a few days,” he said. “I’ll make it up to you, okay?”
Then he left.
That was the last time I saw Garfield Simonds while I was alive.
I took a week off from work to find a new place and move out.
The real estate agent showed me several apartments.
Either the rent was too high or they didn’t allow pets.
Finally, I found one that was affordable and pet–friendly, though it was a bit far.

I called my best friend, Ida, to tell her that Garfield Simonds and I had broken up.
Sensing my low spirits, she pretended to be cheerful. “There are plenty of fish in the sea. I’ll introduce you to someone better.”
“Okay, I joked to keep her from being upset. “He has to be more handsome than Garfield Simonds.”
After the call, I planned to return home to pick up my packed belongings and take Mimi to the new place.
But a runaway truck ended my life that day.
My soul followed my body to the hospital.
I watched as the doctors carefully took my heart from my battered body and placed it into hers.

They worked meticulously, connecting numerous tubes to her.
“Got it!” exclaimed a young doctor excitedly.
I looked at the monitor. My heart started beating inside her chest.
What about me? Am I dead?
A wave of sorrow washed over me.
As the girl was wheeled out of surgery, a crowd gathered, asking about the outcome.
“The surgery was successful. She’ll need two days of observation to get through the critical period,” said the doctor.
A man at the front, gripping the side of the gurney with anxious eyes, was Garfield

Simonds.
“That’s my heart! Why is it hers?” I screamed from above, hovering in the operating room.
The girl was taken to a room.
Garfield Simonds sighed with relief, wanting to follow her in.
But the doctor stopped him, handing him a report.
“Gary, June Tillery’s heart issue is resolved. We couldn’t reach the donor’s family, but she signed an organ donation agreement before she died. Since you and June Tillery are both my students, I took the responsibility. When we reach the donor’s family, you’ll need to explain.”
“By the way, this donor had multiple

cosmetic surgeries. She might have even done it at your hospital.”
Garfield Simonds frowned slightly, as if recalling something.
He pulled out his phone to make a call.
Do you realize it’s me?
I wondered.
The call went unanswered. Hanging up, Garfield Simonds walked away.
