Chapter 2
I’d been sitting on the toilet for too long, and my legs were starting to go numb.
The pressure on my pregnant belly was uncomfortable, and my hand instinctively rubbed it.
Baby, you’re not even born yet, and your dad can’t wait to kill us both.
Daniel, Daniel… you can know a person’s face, but not their heart. I never imagined you could be such a heartless monster.
Suddenly, a shadow flashed past the door.
I froze, my body shaking with fear.
“Sweetheart, you’ve been in there a while. Are

you okay?”
Hearing Daniel’s voice, I instinctively shrank back.
“I’m fine, honey”
I forced my voice to steady.
“Why are you in there so long? I’m worried about you. I can’t sleep without you here.”
His fake concern made me gag with disgust.
“I’ll be done soon. Go back to sleep first.”
The very next morning, Penny arrived.
I suspected she hadn’t slept a wink either; the dark circles under her eyes were so prominent that even her foundation couldn’t conceal them.

As soon as she saw me, Penny rushed over.
“Jane, are you okay? I’ve been so worried about you!”
Daniel glanced over with a curious expression.
I quickly signaled to Penny, and once she caught the hint, she changed the subject.
“Jane mentioned you’re going to the remote area. I’d love to join you, if you don’t mind, Daniel?”
A fleeting, awkward look crossed Daniel’s face.
“Of course I don’t mind! The more the merrier, right? Having another person around to help take care of Jane is actually a relief for me!”

Penny shot me a reassuring glance.
After a quick breakfast, we set off.
It was Daniel who suggested the trip to the remote area. Since my pregnancy had been difficult with severe sickness, I’d been cooped up at home for a while and hadn’t gone out much.
A few days ago, while scrolling through TikTok, I saw a video about hiking, which sparked a little longing in me. The thought of getting outside started to take root.
When Daniel found out, he was practically bursting with excitement.
“Let me take you to the remote area! You’ve never been, right? A friend of mine went
there and said the primitive forest

is stunning–perfect for photos! And you haven’t taken any maternity pictures yet, so we’ll travel and snap some while we’re at it!”
And so, the trip to the remote area was planned.
For the entire week leading up to the departure, Daniel had been researching obsessively and buying camping gear. Watching him prepare so diligently, I even told my baby in my belly how much Daddy loved us and cared about us.
I never imagined, though, that this carefully planned trip would be out of the goal of my death.
The thought made my eyes burn with hatred as I looked at Daniel.
The weather was perfect today, and there

were a lot of tourists lined up outside the scenic area.
On the way, Penny carefully linked her arm with mine.
Halfway there, I mentioned feeling a bit thirsty, and Daniel immediately went to the small shop to buy water.
Once he was out of earshot, Penny turned to me, her expression serious.
“Jane, what did your message last night mean? Did Daniel really cheat?”
I glanced in the direction Daniel had gone, then leaned in close to Penny’s ear, speaking quietly.
“Daniel’s cheating. He’s brought me to this remote area today to kill me and take my

fortune.”
I spoke in one breath, looking around warily. Daniel still wasn’t back.
Penny’s face drained of color.
“What? Jane, you’re joking, right? How could Daniel…”
Before Penny could finish, I caught sight of Daniel coming toward us from afar, a plastic bag in hand.
“Shh, pretend you don’t know. When we head into the mountains, stick with me. Don’t leave my side.”
I hurriedly added, then shifted my gaze, pretending to look at the ticket booth in the distance.

Daniel jogged up and handed each of us a bottle of water.
I took mine, but didn’t drink, worried he might be rushing to poison me.
“Sweetheart, it might be a bit hard to climb up later, but you’ve got to hang in there!”
Daniel said, sipping his own water.
Penny and I exchanged a glance.
