Chapter 20
In her frantic thoughts, she desperately searched for a way to survive, her gaze meeting Isabella’s eyes. Despite trying to hide her worry, it still leaked through, and a wild thought suddenly overtook her mind.
If she was destined to die tonight, then let them all accompany her to the grave!
The cries continued, but Olivia was no longer irritated. She held onto Benjamin tightly, raising her eyes to
look at them.
“I know you called the police, so I’ve changed my mind. I want you all to get on the boat. Once we’re in a safe place, I’ll leave alone.”
Perhaps it was because she had made up her mind, but Olivia had never felt her thoughts so clear.
After a brief moment of hesitation, the first to step forward was Alexander, with Isabella and William following closely behind.
They protected her, keeping her in the middle, while she watched the water, seeing Olivia trying to shield herself with Benjamin. A sudden ominous feeling spread through her.
As they grew closer, the feeling grew stronger.
Finally, when they reached the edge of the port, she suddenly gripped William’s sleeve tightly. “I just feel like… her plan isn’t just to leave…”
As she whispered those words, Alexander stepped onto the boat.
The next second, Olivia attacked without warning. With a sharp sound, the knife pierced Alexander’s
throat.
Then, “Bang!”
A gunshot rang out. Isabella instinctively turned her head, but a cool hand quickly covered her eyes. William’s trembling voice reached her ear.
“Don’t look…”
Three splashes followed, and the cries abruptly ceased. Police and rescue personnel, who had been waiting nearby, rushed in an instant.
Several more splashes sounded, and when Isabella forcefully pulled William’s hand away, the only thing left on the small boat was a pool of fresh blood, while rescue workers, tied with safety ropes, dove to search for the three who had just fallen into the water.
“Benjamin… he…”
“Isabella!”
Chapter 20
Before she could finish her sentence, Isabella felt a heaviness in her chest. Her vision darkened, and she collapsed. In her car, only the gradually fading sound of William’s exclamation remained.
Two days later, Isabella woke up.
The sharp smell of disinfectant water briefly disoriented her. She almost forgot the last time she had been in a hospital.
She slightly curled her fingers, and as she held her hand, William, who had been guarding her bedside, woke up as well.
The television on the wall was broadcasting the latest news, with a headline clearly displayed.
[Carter family’s former adopted daughter, resentful after being cast out, planned revenge, resulting in the deaths of Carter family’s president and his son.】
William, hearing the report, quickly changed the channel, flipping through several others, but they all carried the same news. He awkwardly turned off the TV, feeling regretful for not turning it off sooner.
“It’s not your fault,” Isabella shook her head.
If they were to discuss it, this incident was never William’s fault.
Olivia’s resentment was sown by Alexander and Benjamin themselves. Now, they were bearing the consequences of their own actions, and they couldn’t blame anyone else.
After a moment of silence, she looked up, her voice faint and weak. “I want to see them.”
Life ends, and relationships are severed.
From then on, dust returns to dust, earth to earth, grudges fade, and emotions dissipate.
Isabella didn’t get to see Alexander and Benjamin one last time.
Old Mr. Carter stopped her outside the funeral home. His cloudy eyes waved them off.
“Go back. Everyone go back.”
With white hair, he sent the black–haired ones off. He didn’t know whether to resent the enmity and bitterness that had led the younger generation to their deaths, or to regret his own stubbornness that had forced everyone into this tragic outcome.
The long night stretched on, with fireworks bursting in the sky above the city.
This year’s New Year didn’t belong to them.
