Chapter 5%
I became the talk of the city overnight. Katherine Covey. The long–lost heiress of the Covey empire.
Every major news outlet wanted an exclusive. Headlines speculated about my sudden return, my transformation, my new fiancé. They called it a modern–day Cinderella story–the orphaned girl turned billionaire’s daughter, engaged to one of the most powerful men in the industry.
I ignored all of it. I smiled at reporters when they shoved microphones in my face. I waved when cameras flashed. But I never spoke. I didn’t want them to get too much information about me. I wasn’t even comfortable with this kind of life, but I knew the moment I accepted the role of being the daughter of the Covey family, this is inevitable.
Still, I want them to wonder about me. A part of me enjoyed it. The mystery. The control. Most importantly, the respect and the fear people would associate with me now. For years, I had been voiceless. A shadow in Keith’s life, a fragile woman waiting for his affection. Not anymore. I was done being that orphan, being useless, and certainly being weak.”
But Keith didn’t seem to accept that. As Jeron and I left the banquet hall, I felt the shift in the atmosphere. The way the crowd hushed, whispers turning into gasps.
Then I saw him. Keith. Of course, he would come, especially since he had no idea. Keith hated when he didn’t have any idea about what was happening when he had no control. But I didn’t expect he would crashed this party. His car screeched to a halt, barely missing the curb, and before I could react, he was storming toward me.
“Katherine,” he said breathlessly, his eyes frantic as they searched my face. “I need to talk to you.“}
I barely spared him a glance. “There’s nothing left to say.”
He reached for my wrist, desperation evident in his grip. “Please.”
Please? That was new. Is he going to start begging now?!
Jeron immediately stepped forward. “You heard her, so stay away. What are you even doing here?“}]
Keith’s jaw clenched, his eyes flicking between us. “Stay out of this, Kavinsky. I said I want to talk to my wife, not to you!”
“I suggest you let go before I make you.” Jeron’s voice was calm, but there was a warning in it. “And wife? She isn’t your wife. She’s mine now.”
Keith’s fingers twitched before he slowly released me. “I just… need a minute. Please, Katherine. Please, let me explain. I know you learned about it. You’re mad at me. Yes, but, please, allow me to explain.”
I should have walked away. But instead, I met his gaze–and I saw it. Panic. Regret. Fear.
He was losing control. Good. That was what I wanted since the beginning. I wanted him to beg, but I didn’t think it would be too soon. I wasn’t sure why he was suddenly like this. Did he realize he loved me… or was this a business to him again?
“I’ll give you one minute,” I said, crossing my arms.
His shoulders sagged with relief. “I—“}
Of course, that was a joke because before he could say a word I slapped him. The sound echoed through the night, sharp and unforgiving. Keith staggered back, shock flashing across his face as he cradled his cheek.
“I was kidding. I don’t need to hear anything from you.“}
“Katherine… what the-” His jaw dropped.!
“You lost me already,” I said coldly. “So get lost.”}
I turned on my heels and stepped into the car without looking back.
The next morning, my slap was all over the media. Keith Ambrose publicly humiliated by his estranged wife. Clips of the encounter flooded social media, slowed down and replayed from different angles. Some called it empowering. Others called me vindictive.
I didn’t care. But then, the narrative changed.}
Rumors spread like wildfire–Katherine Ambrose was the unfaithful one.
“She cheated on Keith with Jeron Kavinsky.”
“That’s why she left.”
“Keith loved her, but she betrayed him.“>
Lies. And I let them talk. Until it started affecting business.
At the board meeting, the council wasn’t pleased.}
“These rumors are damaging to the Covey name,” one of the executives said, sliding a tablet across the table. “People are questioning your credibility.”
I glanced at the headlines, my fingers tapping against the polished surface.
“And what do you suggest?” I asked.
An older man cleared his throat. “You need to address this publicly. Silence is only making it worse.“}
I nodded, already knowing what to do. Honestly, I didn’t care about anything… but it seemed like Keith would never stop until I stop him.&
An hour later, I released a statement. I didn’t just deny the allegations–I destroyed them. I sent the press proof. Photos. Videos. Screenshots of Keith with Sasha. Every single detail of his infidelity.
The media ate it up. The narrative shifted once again. Keith Ambrose–the cheater. The manipulator. The liar. By the end of the day,
12:03 PM
Covey Enterprises officially cut ties with him.”
I wasn’t sure how he would handle that. As for Sasha, I hope her career would be ruined after this.
I thought Keith would stop, that he would finally realized that he had nothing on me now. But then he didn’t. For a week, Keith wouldn’t stop texting me. He sent apologies, desperate pleases, and flowers. Is he really serious? Did he really think it would make up for everything he had done to me??
I threw them all away. Then, on the eighth day, he showed up.
I watched from my bedroom window as he stood outside the Covey estate, soaked from the pouring rain.”
He wasn’t leaving. He just stood there, waiting.”
Jeron entered the room, hands in his pockets. “Still out there?”
I nodded.
Jeron sighed, shaking his head. “Pathetic.“%
I said nothing.
Keith was breaking–just as I imagined.”
But I wasn’t done yet.
I turned to Jeron. “I want him to spend the rest of his life in jail.”
