Chapter 10
At dinner, Iris was happily munching away, grinning at her phone.
Alan suddenly lost it, throwing his bowl at her and covering her phone with soup.
Iris, totally blindsided, went ballistic. “Alan, what the hell are you doing? You‘ re so bold now that you‘ re throwing things at your own mother?”
I jumped in to calm things down. “Mom, don’t get so upset. Alan‘ s just frustrated because of his leg…”
Iris was the kind of person who’d throw a fit without a second thought, not caring about the situation.
Iris lost her mind, her fury hitting every
note.
“I’m your mother! Do you think it’s easy for me to see you like this? If you hadn’t been fooling around with that tramp, you

wouldn’t be in this mess!”
She raged about the money spent on his medical bills and how he wasn‘ t bringing in anything. “All you do now is eat and whine. How did I end up with such an ungrateful son? You‘ re worse than-”
She caught herself and pointed at me. “Katrina, how could you let my son end up like this? He’s disabled now, and instead of comforting him, you let him lose it on me. Do you want me to knock
you senseless?”
“Enough!” Alan roared. “Worse than who?
That bastard‘ s son?”
Iris‘ s repeated jabs about Alan‘ s injury and her harsh words- “crippled” and
“disabled” were like knives twisting in Alan‘ s heart.
She tried to cover her tracks, her eyes darting around. “What bastard? What son? I don’t know what you‘ re talking
about…”

“Whatever man you‘ re seeing, I’m telling you one last time–give me back my money.”
At the mention of money, Iris‘ s voice shot up. “What money? What are you going to do with it? Is that tramp asking for more? Or is that bitch begging for cash again?”
“Son, I told you those women are just after your money. Only your mother truly cares. The money‘ s safe with me; it’s always been yours. If I give it to you, it’ll just become joint property with your wife.”
“How can that bitch deserve your money? Listen to your mother–stop making a
scene. The money‘ s saved for you. Don’t worry… Ahh!!”
Alan, sitting in his wheelchair, grabbed the cane beside him and jabbed it into Iris‘ s stomach, spinning his chair to trap her against the wall.
His face was red with rage, his eyes blazing. “Don’t pull that on me. That

money is not for you to spend on your lover.”
I leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, enjoying the show. People like them always get their due.
They’d once teamed up against me, with Iris’s manipulative ways. Alan, benefiting from it, thought his mother was always right. Now that she was using the same tactics on him, he was finally getting a taste
of his own medicine.
But this was just the beginning.
Go on, fight back. Don’t back down, I thought to myself.
Iris had never been challenged like this, not even by her own son. She grabbed one end of the cane and yanked it, almost pulling Alan out of his wheelchair.
“Alan, what’s your deal? You gave me the money. It’s my retirement fund, and I’ll spend it however I want. I raised you from nothing. What’s it to you?

“You’re a cripple now, and won’t earn a dime. How will you support me if you take your money back? You ungrateful son, trying to kill your own mother… Oh my! The ungrateful son trying to kill his mother…”
In his fury, Alan swung the cane and started hitting Iris.
Iris, who had fought her whole life,

Alan, lacking legs, couldn’t match Iris‘ s fury. His anger clouded his judgment, and then he spotted a shiny knife on the table…
