Sure enough, before bed, my daughter confided in me.
“Mom, I don’t want to forgive Dad.”
“Why?”
“Because Dad once said he wished I would die.”
I was shocked, covering my mouth in disbelief.
Tears flowed instantly.
I held my daughter tightly, heartbroken.
She’s just five; why does she have memories from a past life?
There was a rustling noise outside the door.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar figure.
I knew Ethan had overheard.
After a long while, Ethan slowly opened the door.
He walked to our daughter and knelt down with a thud.
“Sweetie, I was wrong. I truly was. I was the one who said those horrible things. This time, no matter what, I won’t let you get hurt.”
Our daughter hid in my arms, looking timidly at the broken man before her.
Her body still trembled slightly.
Ethan reached out, wanting to touch her head, but stopped mid–air, afraid his actions might scare her again.
“Sweetie, can you give Dad another chance? I promise I’ll protect and love you with my life.”
Ethan’s voice was choked with emotion, almost pleading.
Our daughter didn’t respond, just remained in my embrace.
Since then, Ethan seemed to be a changed man.
He canceled most non–essential social events and came home early every day to be with her.
He patiently told her stories, played games with her, and took her to the park.
Our daughter remained distant.
1, on the other hand, smiled secretly in the corner.

He had taken the bait.
One day, while picking her up from school, I suddenly received anonymous threatening texts.
I knew it had to be Ethan’s sister’s doing.
Back home, I told Ethan about it.
His eyes turned cold and determined.
“Don’t worry, I won’t let her harm you two again. I’ll deal with this once and for all.”
“Alright, we’ll trust you one more time.”
After that, Ethan’s sister was unreachable.
I overheard Ethan on the phone.
“Yes, make sure she never sets foot in this city again. If she dares resist, hand all the evidence to the police and let her rot in jail.”
Not knowing what was said on the other end, Ethan added fiercely, “If she dares lay a finger on my daughter and wife, I won’t spare her, no
matter the cost.”
Hearing this, I let out a quiet, cold laugh.
Watching them tear each other apart was quite the spectacle.
Since then, Ethan’s care for us became even more meticulous.
He managed everything at home perfectly. Anything we wanted, he’d go to great lengths to provide.
One day, our daughter ran in excitedly.
“Mom, Dad said he’s taking us to the beach today. Let’s get ready!”
Seeing her excitement, I decided to enjoy this rare moment with them.
At the beach, Ethan played with her in the sand like a child.
I watched from afar, not planning to join in.
However, just as we were about to leave, a familiar figure appeared before us.
It was Ethan’s sister.
She looked so haggard that I almost didn’t recognize her.
She looked at Ethan coldly and said, “Do you really think you can cover everything up? Some things come with a price.”
