Chapter 10
Chad paused for a few seconds, then quickly regained his composure and turned the question back on her.

“I can answer your question, but before 1 do, I have one of my own. Why did you choose me as your marriage.
partner?”
This ti
time, it was Jenna’s turn to be at a loss for words.
Luckily, her quick mind helped her come up with a few reasonable explanations.
“I’m the only daughter of the Hall family, and you’re the head of the Spencer family. A marriage between us is a way of strengthening both families.
Plus, the age gap isn’t too big, so we’ll have common ground to talk about. You’re excellent in every way, so I figured. I’d try my luck if you agreed, I’d have gotten a pretty good deal out of it.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Chad knew she was just making up an excuse. It wasn’t what she truly thought.
But there were some things he genuinely wanted to know.
After listening to her ramble on, he pressed on with a more important question.
“In your mind, was I your first choice for the marriage? Or, was it Charlie?”
-The car grew suddenly silent at the mention of his name. Jenna’s gaze shifted subtly, as memories of the past stirred.
within her.
Chad immediately realized she wasn’t ready to talk about that person, and was about to change the topic when he heard her voice, softer than before.
“No.”
The two words were firm and decisive, and when Jenna lifted her head to look at him, there was an expression in her eyes he had never seen before–determined, unwavering.
“If you hadn’t agreed, I wouldn’t have married into the Spencer family. I would’ve found a way to cancel the engagement.”
Hearing that, Chad felt a strange sense of relief. He rubbed his fingertips together thoughtfully before asking two more questions that were of great importance to him.
“Is Charlie not good enough? Didn’t you like him?”
There was a hint of something complex in his voice, something Jenna couldn’t quite grasp.
She picked up on the undercurrent in his tone and understood why he was asking. She knew her answer would determine the nature of their relationship going forward.

Chapter 10
Chad was a man who prided himself on his restraint and self control. He would never allow himself to be a second. choice, a substitute for someone else’s desires.
In their past life, his feelings had been hurled deep, locked away for over thirty years, only to be discovered after his untimely death. This showed just how strong his self–discipline was.
If he knew she had been reborn solely to avoid the mistakes of the past, and had chosen him as a way to prevent history from repeating itself, he would undoubtedly bury those feelings again.
That was not something Jenna wanted to see.
So, she lied.
“I only liked his face. I thought, if I’m going to marry into a family, it wouldn’t hurt to marry a handsome guy, so I pursued him.”
“You must have known he didn’t like me, right? I don’t have your abilities, and it’s only recently that I found out. But as the eldest daughter of the Hall family, how could I stand having my husband harbor feelings for someone else?
So, without any hesitation, I decided to break up with him. You’re a hundred times better than him. I thought I might as well give it a try.
After all, the whole of Jingbei knows that Jenna would do anything–no matter how embarrassing–to chase after at
man.”
Her tone was casual, but Chad could see the faint trace of tears in her eyes.
Having spent years in the business world, dealing with all kinds of people, he could easily read a person’s emotions.
But facing the lie in Jenna’s words, he couldn’t bring himself to scold her. Instead, all he wanted was to pull her into
his arms.
And that’s exactly what he did.
After all, they were already husband and wife. The boundaries he once respected no longer mattered.
The woman in his arms was quietly sobbing, her tears dampening his shirt. The sensation caused a dull ache in his chest.
He gently patted her back, his voice soothing, as soft as a spring breeze.
“This isn’t going to extremes. This is bravery, not desperation.”
The simple words were like plaster, smoothing over the jagged, painful scars that had been etched into Jenna’s heart for years.
She didn’t hold back her emotions any longer. All the pain, the frustration, and the years of suppressed sorrow flowed freely as tears.
After a long, cathartic cry, her makeup was ruined, and the car came to a stop.
Chapter 10
Inside the car, only the newlywed couple remained, entwined in each other’s embrace.
Once the emotions settled. Jenna felt a bit embarrassed when she thought about what had just happened.
Why did she cry in front of him? How should she explain that?
But before she could dwell too much on it, Chad spoke first.
“You were curious about why I agreed to the marriage, right? The reason is the same as yours. First, it’s about strengthening both families; second, because I think you’re great; third, I’m getting older, and it’s time to settle
down.”
Jenna immediately understood that he was just brushing her off.
In their past life, he hadn’t married until he was thirty–five, despite being pushed by his family. He hadn’t settled down for her.
So, in a soft voice, she muttered under her breath.
“Liar.”
Chad glanced at her in surprise but didn’t say anything in return, merely nodding in acknowledgment.
“You lied to me too. So, we’re even.”
