Chapter 17
Chad followed her gaze and frowned slightly.
During the year they had been married, he rarely paid attention to Charlie’s affairs, though he occasionally heard things about him.
Although Chad disliked his reckless lifestyl
he couldn’t ignore the fact that Charlie was his younger brother’s only
As the head of the Spencer family, both emotionally and rationally, Chad couldn’t just watch Charlie destroy himself.
So, after the family dinner, Chad called him into the study.
What exactly was said during their conversation wasn’t clear, but when Charlie emerged from the study, his appearance had improved. He looked much more energized, his spirits clearly lifted.
Seeing him recover, Old Master Spencer, Spencer’s father, and Spencer’s mother all felt a weight lifted from their
hearts.
On the way home, Jenna couldn’t contain her curiosity.
“Hubby, what did you two talk about in the study?”
Chad tucked the baby under the blanket and held Jenna’s hand gently in his.
“I gave him the I project.”
“Just like that?”
“Just like that.”
Seeing the confusion on her face, Chad patiently explained.
“The reason he’s been drinking all the time is because he’s been living a life of excess for too long, too caught up in love and indulgence. I gave him something to focus on, something to keep him busy.
That way, he won’t have time to wallow in his thoughts. It’s better than letting him drink himself into trouble and worry his brother and sister–in–law.”
Winter passed, and spring came, then another year went by.
The two little girls grew up slowly, babbling and calling “Mommy” and “Daddy.”
Since their marriage, Chad, who had once been called a workaholic, had adopted a more regular schedule–leaving work at the same time every day.
Every day after work, his first task was to pick up various sweets, toys, and sometimes a bouquet of flowers for Jenna, just as she had asked him to.
Chapter 17
Before he even stepped through the door, the two little ones were already there, hearing his footsteps and rushing toward him, calling out “Daddy, Daddy” non–stop.
The CEO, known for his swift and efficient decisions in the business world, was now completely overwhelmed by the relentless attack of his daughters.
At times, he’d be seen pushing the eldest daughter on the swing, and at other times, he was chasing the younger one on the toy train. He never got a moment to rest.
Meanwhile, Jenna would leisurely lie on the couch, eating fruit, smiling at him as he dashed about, constantly on
the move.
After enduring this “torture” for four or five years, Chad had had enough. Once the girls reached the right age, he sent them to kindergarten.
On the first day of school, after waving goodbye and watching the two little girls disappear into the school building. he let out a long sigh of relief, then took Jenna by the hand and left.
Seeing his impatience, she clicked her tongue playfully and teased him.
“Back then, I don’t remember who it was who said two daughters would be great, that you’d want to spend every moment with them as they grew up.
You even said you’d start a kindergarten at home. Yet, just a few years later, you can’t stand it?”
Chad rubbed his brow, deeply regretful for his past ignorance and naivety.
“Both of us aren’t that lively, so why are our two kids so much more energetic than we ever were?”
Jenna, with a stern look, felt she had a lot to say on the matter. She gazed at him seriously and spoke with deep
conviction.
“It’s not that you spoil them too much, but every time I try to say something, you jump in and make excuses. How could they possibly calm down? Honestly, you’re just setting yourself up for trouble.”
After being lectured, Chad didn’t dare utter a word.
Seeing his quiet, defeated look, the driver, Uncle James, couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Madam, ever since you married Mr. Spencer, his position in the family has only been getting lower and lower! Who could’ve imagined that the man who used to keep a straight face with everyone now is completely whipped by his daughters?”
Chad shook his head helplessly, unable to argue with that.
Jenna covered her mouth, laughing softly, her eyes sparkling with amusement
“Uncle James, don’t let his frown fool you–he’s actually enjoying all of this!”
“That’s right! Madam, you don’t know how much the employees at the company appreciate you. They say ever since
Chapter 17
Mr. Spencer got married, he finally understood the importance of family, so now no one has to work overtime.
They all get to leave on time just like him.”
“Since that’s the case,” Jenna teased, “Uncle James, you can park the car on the side of the road and head home as
well.”
With the boss’s orders. Uncle James didn’t hesitate. He quickly parked the car and handed over the keys.
Chad took the driver’s seat and entered an address on the screen.
Jenna, not knowing what he was up to, casually asked, “What are we going to that Mountain for?”
“For a date. The weather’s so nice, and I heard a new hot spring resort opened there. We can check out the autumn
scenery too.”
Jenna had originally planned to go home and take a nap, but since he hadn’t given her a heads–up about this spontaneous trip, she raised an objection.
Chad softened his voice and tried to negotiate with her.
“How long has it been since we’ve had some alone time? Darling, this is a rare chance.”
Unable to resist him, Jenna reluctantly agreed.
After a relaxing soak in the hot springs, the couple sat side by side by the floor to ceiling windows, watching the rolling hills of pine trees and red leaves.
Chad gently tied her hair up as it fell loose, his movements patient and meticulous.
Looking into his soft, affectionate eyes, Jenna suddenly felt an unfamiliar sense of unreality.
Could this peaceful life, where everything is in harmony, really be part of her own life now?
After a while, as he continued to gaze at her, Chad teased her by lightly tapping her nose.
“What’s the matter? What are you daydreaming about?”
After a long pause, Jenna asked him a question.
“If I hadn’t married you, or rather, if I hadn’t married into the Spencer family, would you have married someone else?”
“No.”
His answer was so firm that it took Jenna by surprise.
“Why?”
Why?
Chapter 17
Chad leaned back against the chair, one arm around her shoulder, his deep, dark eyes looking into the distance.
“If it weren’t for the marriage alliance, I wouldn’t have thought about getting married at all.”
Jenna knew he was telling the truth–but also not telling the whole truth.
For instance, in his first senterice, he omitted the part‘
you” between “not” and “marriage.”
He wouldn’t marry anyone else, except her.
In her past life, Jenna already knew the answer, so she had no doubts.
But now, in this life, they’d been married for so many years, and their children had grown up so much. Yet, he still kept his feelings for her, his long–held affection, completely hidden.
Jenna couldn’t help but admire his restraint.
