Just then, the door came open and in strolled Ella, Neil’s mother, his father, and three other family members whose faces I
couldn’t remember.
They all the same expression on their faces. Their jaws dropping open like they had seen a ghost and their eyes slowly trailing from mine to Neil’s grip on my wrist.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” Deli’s loud voice echoed throughout the room as she stepped forward, yanking my hand off of her son. “why are you here?”
I found it amusing. “is this how we meet after all these years? You’ve aged so much in such a short time,” I waved a finger in her face. Tm guessing the Botox isn’t doing it for you anymore, is it? I commented at the wrinkles creased into her skin.
I saw her face visibly drop, she took one step back. The old Leah would have never spoken to her that way. Everyday in that marriage, she reminded me I was a stand in a dog on all fours, to know my place, and I’d taken it all without ever questioning her. I wished I could frame the look of shock on her face as she stared at me.
“Mother, I told you I saw her, I wasn’t lying!” Ella’s voice drew my attention to her where she hid behind Deli as if she feared what I could do to her.
She pointed her perfectly manicured fingers at me, “Neil got shot because of her! Who knows if she was tracking him down, and intentionally hired those men to shoot him!”

I reached into my purse and tore out a page of my checkbook I always kept with me. I handed it over to Deli, “I came here to drop this, it’s a blank check, it’s for your compensation fee, your son took the bullet for me, so it’s only fair that I pay back, write whatever you will, my team will take care of it.”
I began to head towards the door, “oh, by the way,” I stopped in front of Ella, “that dress you’re wearing, it’s Helen–eah, collection #105, limited,” my lips pulled into a small smirk, I designed that dress.
With that, I took my leave. I headed first to the bathroom, to wash my hands of the filth of crossing paths with the Devon family.
Seeing how glued Ella was to them, Neil must have finally gotten to marry his true love.
The small way he’d asked me to stay lingered in my mind for a second but I brushed it off, this had to be the last time, I hoped to never cross paths with these piece of shit
“Why would you do that?!” Max yelled in my face as soon as I arrived at the hotel room.
“I called you, I tried everything to reach you and-”
I cut him off, “Max?” I said in a soft voice, my hands folded over my chest as I began to take steps towards him, “I think you’re starting to forget your place.”
My words must have settled in his chest because I saw his gaze soften.
“You’re forgetting that I, I dug my index finger into my chest, “do a thing called what I want, and no one, can stop me. I don’t regret today, if anything, now I know my life could possibly be in danger and we’re going to get to the bottom of it.”
Max pocketed his hands, nodding at me, I’m sorry,” he lowered his voice, “I just got a little too nervous.”

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a morning flight to catch, good night,”
“Mommy!” Helen let out a scream as we walked into the house. It was an old mansion built in the middle of Beverly Hills. We had massive security and I’d lived here with Max and his mother since I moved to LA. I never found a reason to move, the protection was high and it was close to my company
I crouched to her height to receive her hug.
Did you miss me?” I smiled at her. Helen was my whole world, I loved her so much, even though she reminded me of man I wanted to forget the most. From his hair, to his eyes and the shape of his lips, she was a carbon copy.
“Hm–hm!” She nodded fast, “I made so many cookies while you were away!”
“You two made it back Max’s mother, Ricle walked right in after Helen.
The living room was as wide as it could get with white marble floors. The green walls had expensive art lining them up and the huge chandelier was a remarkable light Source.
“Yes indeed. I’m so tired,” I smiled at her, “thank you for taking care of Helen while I was gone, I told her before turning to Max, “is everything prepared for the meeting with the shareholders for the upcoming investment plan?”
Max blinked at me, “y.. yes?”
Okay good,” I nodded, “that’s all on my schedule for now, so Helen, baby, come with mommy to…
“Leah?” Max stopped me by a hold of my wrist. “can I talk to you for a second?” He said, pulling me away from Helen and Riele.
“What is it?” I frowned once we were out of hearing.
“Are you crazy?” He whispered, “why would you attend the meeting after what happened at the funeral?”
“It’s in a week, isn’t it?” I raised a brow.
“Yes but-”
“isn’t that enough time to get the police to investigate while also tightening my security?”
“Yes Leah but-”
“But nothing.” I scoffed, “nothing has ever gotten in the way of my business and it won’t start now. I’m about to be in the biggest meeting with elites around the world, and you’re coming up with excuses?” I turned around to leave. “I need to go be with my daughter, please prepare for it‘
With that, I left his side and headed straight to Helen’s room.
