Chapter 13
I still had so many questions but right now, stopping his bleeding was my priority. Supporting his weight, I took hastened
steps
in the direction he’d pointed at..
There truly was a cabin here.
“Key’s in my pocket,” he said in a low voice once we stood by the door, completely drenched by the pouring rain.
I tapped on his side pockets before finally finding a bunch of keys.
“Which one is it?” I frowned, slipping multiple keys into the keyhole, trying to find the right fit. He stopped me with a hold of my wrist before taking the keys from ime,
He inserted it and hauled us in
It was completely dark and smelled like old books. I noticed his hand searching the wall for something, and that was when he flicked a light switch on.
The only thing in here was a bed, and a small shelf with a smaller door.
I stared at Neil and how he was masking his struggle, “where is the first aid kit?” I rolled my eyes, hating that he had to drag me into this.
“On top of that shelf.” he said.
I stood on the tip of my toes to reach it, pulling the kit down.
“Take your shirt off, I ordered him, sitting at the edge of the bed, unraveling the kit.
He
sat up, starting to undo his buttons, Tm fine, it’s just the wound from the surgery must have come open, just bandage it up.”
“Exactly.” I snapped at him, suddenly turning to look at him. I opened my mouth to argue more when I trailed off. I’d forgotten what Neil’s bare body was like. I remembered how in awe I’d been when he’d come home that night drunk, saying how much he needed me next to him, I was sure he must have mistook me for Ella in his drunken state but that was the first time he had sex with me in our marriage and I ended up pregnant. Just like that night, his sculpted muscular body left me speechless. I remembered I had something to say and finished up, so why on earth would you do something so careless?”
I cleared my throat, getting out the wet napkin to clean off his wound.
Thad to protect you,” he frowned.
My eyebrows pulled together in anger, “that’s not your fucking place Neil”
“Exactly,” he suddenly raised his voice at me, causing me to jerk back a little. I stared right into his eyes and met an anger I had never seen before. His eyes were reddening and his eyebrows pulled together caused wrinkles to crease into his forehead, “it’s not my fucking place to care about you,” he got to his feet, shoving my hands off his chest. I watched as Neil started to pace back and forth, raking his fingers through his hair and I nodded to myself, this was the version of him I remembered, not the weird concerned one he was portraying.
“After you gave me that ridiculous divorce letter, I thought, surely, she would come back to her fucking senses, he snapped, kicking an old beer can out of his way. He stopped pacing to briefly stare at me, “I thought you were in so much shock, you needed space to clear your head, I looked for you, the whole team did, but it was like you had vanished from the face of the
earth.”
He stopped in front of me at the foot of the bed, gripping on to my arm, and pulling me to my feet, “days passed, fucking months passed, a stupid divorce letter and then I see you at a funeral with the same man from years ago,” he leaned in closer, lowering his head so he could meet my height, and he’s holding you so intimately and-”

Iyanked my am fiom his grip, what are you complaining for?” I spoke in the same intensity as he did, my teeth grinding against each other. “every tucking day in that hell of a marriage, you and your family did nothing but remind me that I was a stand in How on earth are you going to be mad at me, when you never treated me as your wife? I almost laughed at the
www.
“Living as Leah Devon was a hell for me, you reminded me every day of my life that I was never going to be a wife to you couldn’t divorce me, you slidn’t want me, yet you didn’t let me go my lists clenched by my sides as the memory of those years filled my head
His gaze softened, he took one step away from me, “you’ve changed, the Leah I knew would have never spoken like this
and-”
“The Leah you knew I broke out laughing in sarcasm, I noticed his nose flaring at my mockery, “you didn’t know any fucking thing about me! All day long, you cried about Ella, nothing but fucking Ella, you never cared to know a thing about me, you didn’t fuck me, you didn’t fucking kiss me, the only thing I had access to in your life was the family business cards, and fulfilling my obligation as a wife, I moved forward, causing him to take a step back, “you knew fucking nothing Neil Devon. I was an old toy you didn’t want, so what is your problem?”
He nodded, “so that’s why you’re hanging out with any man, letting him hold
voice
you as much as he wants.” He said in a softer
I rolled my eyes. “I can be with anyone Neil Devon, and it wouldn’t be your problem, I waved my hands in his face, “you got what you fucking wanted, so why are you here with me? And not with Ella? Why are you getting involved in my life?”
I trailed off when he suddenly snaked one arm under my waist, shoving me forward so my chest was pressed against his own, and then, in a voice almost as low as a whisper, he added, “that’s what I want to know too, why the fuck do I care so much?”
