Chapter 5

Ella must have noticed Neil’s distraction because she pulled back and asked, “what’s wrong Neil?“
I didn’t wait to hear anything or see more, I hurried away from sight, and headed into the elevator, back to my room.
My hands were shaky, my breathing pattern had changed. I knew it but it still shocked me. I sat on the bed, pressing one hand to my chest to try to calm my nerves, it wasn’t even one night since I was gone and Neil was already with Ella in a hotel
I reached for my phone, trying my best to work against my trembling hands. I needed to call someone, as I scrolled through my phone list, I realized everyone on there were people that shared the same circle as Neil, they were colleagues from work where I was the sales director for the Devon family business.
The only other family I had was my father but ever since he married my step mom, she threatened to leave him if he got involved with me.
I buried my face in my hands, “what do I do?” I asked no one, the image of my husband and cousin still in my head. And that was when I thought about it, “I need to leave, nobody wants me here, nobody.”
But I had nowhere to go.
I sat up sharply, suddenly remembering Max.
“I didn’t want to wake you up, how are you–” I cut him
his cheerful voice started to say once he’d picked up the phone but off.
Tm so sorry to call you this early.” I told him.
“It’s absolutely fine,” he said, “is everything okay?”
“Yes” I stopped, burying my face in my hands, no, no it’s not,” I shook my head like he could see me, “T’m not doing okay and I need to get out of here, now and fast.”
“Do you need me to get the police! Is someone bothering you? What’s-
“No, please. 1 just need to get out of here.”
“Okay,” I could hear shuffling noises in the background, accompanied by the sound of keys, “where do you want to go? I’ll take you there right away.”
I felt a warmth in my heart, I was so grateful for Max, he was so willing to show me this immense amount of kindness when he basically didn’t know who I was, and I wasn’t going to take it for granted.
“Leah?” The sound of his voice calling my name jerked me back to reality.
“I don’t know, I don’t-” I stopped, I had nowhere to go, or anywhere to turn to. Everything around me reminded me of Neil, I had spent the last four years living in the shadow of being his wife, he didn’t know anything about me, he didn’t care to, and not only did he leave me to die, he was here with another woman to have sex.
I shut my eyes tight, gripping onto the hem of my shirt, swallowing hard before adding, “can you take me to LA with you!”
“Are you sure about this?” Max asked me as I put all my things in a bag.
I nodded without looking up at him.

I nodded. “Thank you
T’ve asked my staff to arrange everything,” he said, our flight leaves by midnight.”
This was getting even more real with each passing time.
By now my bags were secured. Max had them in his hands as he led me out of the hotel room. I held my phone in my hand. ready to turn it off for good I wanted nothing to do with the assholes anymore, I was going to live as my own person, away from the shattering lite I had
Just before it went off, an unknown number flashed on the screen.
“Who is “” Max asked me as we headed down the elevator
“I don’t know.” I said in a low voice, nobody ever contacted me, except Neil when he had to text me work related news.
I ignored it, heading out of the hotel and straight to the airport. The tedious process felt like hell and just when we were about to get on the plane. it was a call from the same number
Picking the phone up in hesitation, I finally put it up to my car, “yes?”
“Leah Devon?” The female voice on the other end called. I cringed at the last name.
“Who is this” I asked sharply.
You were at our hospital last night and didn’t get discharged properly, we had to inform you of a few things after we ran a series of test on you”
I was so confused and trying to process it all when her next words caused me to freeze in shock.
“After yesterday’s event, we can assure you that both you and the baby are fine, but we still need to run a series of-”
“I’m sorry what? My body went stiff, my heart pounding in its cage, certain I hadn’t heard her, “I think you’ve made a
