After that day, Jessica and Sarah had a
falling out.
She left the group, and was on her own now.
Nick finally realized that Sarah wasn’t
interested, since she never accepted his
follow request. So, he started trying to get
back with me.
I was so tired of it, that I hired some guys
from the boxing club to have a little talk with
him.
Nick backed down immediately.
Heartbroken, he sat outside of the dorm and
met Jessica, coming back from the library.
The two shared a common misery and just
<
like in my first life, started dating.
But this time, things were different for Sarah.
She’d lost one of her loyal followers.
Jessica was boy–crazy and Nick sweet–talked
her right into his arms. They were sleeping
together within a month.
After that, Nick started asking Jessica for gifts.
He said he needed new sneakers, so Jessica ate ramen for a whole month to buy him Air Jordans.
Michelle and I were coming back from the cafeteria one day, and we saw Sarah and Jessica arguing.
<
“You’re the only one who hasn’t paid for
class dues yet. How long are you going to
drag this on?”
Sarah was tapping Jessica’s desk, impatient.
“I can’t pay that right now. I won’t go to the
class events if that’s what it takes!” Jessica’s
face was red.
“You don’t have 500 bucks?”
Sarah looked down her nose at Jessica.
“You spent all that money on your boyfriend,
didn’t you? I told you not to look for a man in
the trash!”
“Why do you buy him new shoes? You’re not
his mom!”
“And you’re always eating instant noodles
and pickles in the dorm, it smells awful, so
gross.
“You!”
Jessica couldn’t win against Sarah’s insults.
She broke down crying on her desk.
I saw Jessica’s old and worn canvas
sneakers.
And suddenly,, I didn’t feel so good.
Nick was acting like he was trying to do well in college, but he was a gambling addict. He was also catfishing girls online with photos that were heavily filtered.
<
I only found out after I died.
Jessica, the soft–hearted romantic, was going
to get destroyed by him.
I sighed, and went over to them.
“I’ll cover her dues.”
Sarah looked shocked. “What a show off.”
Jessica stopped crying.
I turned to her and quietly said:
“Nick is not a good person, you shouldn’t
believe everything he says.”
But Jessica jumped up and started yelling at
- me.
く
“Who do you think you are? Stop acting like
you’re so great. Nick was really hurt by you.
Why are you saying these things about him?!”
I was shocked. Her spit landed on my face.
Michelle came to my defense. She frowned,
“Jessica, that’s not fair. Ashley’s just trying to
help you.”
“I can spend my money however I want! Mind
your own business!”
I took a deep breath, told myself to let it go.
Sarah was laughing.
“Looks like your saintly plan backfired.”
“You still paying for her? Cash or Venmo?”
く
I cleaned my ears out, “What class dues? Did
I hit my head?”
Sarah’s jaw dropped. I was just too thick-
skinned for her. She turned away.
