Book7–Chapter 1
On the day I demanded a divorce, the call I made to my husband Lucas Krueger was answered by his secretary, Kelly Conley.
Her voice was sweet as she replied, “Mr. Krueger is in a meeting, so he can’t take your call right now. Please tell me if there’s anything you wanna say to him.”
She was Lucas‘ new flame.
This time, I didn’t make a scene or get angry. Instead, I just calmly remarked, “Tell him the divorce papers are on the bedside table.”
On my way to the airport, I called Lucas.
A coquettish female voice answered the phone.
“Helen, Mr. Krueger asked me to tell you he’s in a meeting. If there’s anything, you can tell me. I’ll
pass it on later.”
I paused, holding the phone.
This must be Lucas’s new lover, I figured.
She graduated from a community college, and it was impossible for her to stay at Mercado Group,
where there was full of elites. But Lucas had her work as his secretary after a mere glance at her
resume.
Over the past year, Lucas and I had countless arguments because of her, and I even went to the
company to have HR fire her.
But Lucas protected her well.
A year had passed, and she was still doing her job as Lucas‘ secretary, going on business trips with
Lucas all over the world.
Now, I finally had enough.
My effort was meaningless.
I didn’t bother to respond to the poorly concealed provocation in her tone. I just felt exhausted and
calmly said, “Please tell him the divorce papers are on the bedside table. He can sign them when he
gets back.”
“What-”
Before she could finish, I hung up.

When I used to have a big fight with Lucas, I always thought about how I would make a big fuss if we really divorced.
I wouldn’t let him have it easy if I wasn’t.
But now that it had really come to this, I was actually calm.
I didn’t take anything with me, for everything at home that I shared with Lucas made me sick.
The only thing I took was myself.
Just before boarding, Lucas sent me a message.
“I saw the divorce papers. What’s wrong with you this time?”
Even through the screen, I could imagine his impatient expression.
I didn’t reply, just putting my phone on airplane mode.
We both knew the answer to his question crystal clear.
Ever since Kelly became his secretary, Lucas started coming home later than usual.
There were no traces of a woman’s hair on him or perfume. It was just that he started staring at his phone for longer periods, occasionally smiling like a lovesick fool.
I tried to probe a few times, but Lucas just lightly replied, “There’s nothing between us; you’re overthinking it.”
We’d argued countless times over Kelly.
I asked him to transfer her, but he just complained that I was being unreasonable.
I’d cried, made a scene, and pleaded with him.
Once, I sat like a shrew in the middle of the mess, threatening to kill myself with broken porcelain
But he just coldly snapped, “Helen Scott, do you know how pathetic you look right now?”
I couldn’t help but give a bitter smile.
Yeah, he was right.
At that time, I was like possessed.
I loved him too much, or maybe I had invested too much sunk cost in him.
Just the thought of losing him felt heartbroken.
To be honest, I was just not willing to accept it.

I’d been with him for ten years, watching him turning from a penniless young man to a well–respected CEO.
Why could someone he’d only known for a year take him away from me?
