During lunch, I sensed that Beckett seemed to want to explain something, bu
quiet, so he seemed to hold back.
Finally, he couldn’t resist and looked up at me: “Cora, earlier…”
I kept eating from my own bowl and said flatly, “Don’t talk while eating.”
Beckett choked, swallowing his words.
I laughed coldly inside.
In the past, when we were together, it was mostly me chattering away.
But often, he would just have a bland expression in response to the topics I delib brought up.
If not that, he would say, don’t talk while eating.
Back then, I felt ashamed, thinking my manners weren’t good enough.
It was only later that I understood, it wasn’t about manners.
