“I work.” She gave Jerren a shrug but then Egan was yanking on her arm, and she sighed, “I have a degree from Columbus in cybersecurity. It was what I was doing in Burbank. I did a presentation on behalf of my employer.”
“You told the border patrol agent you were an editor.”
She lifted an eyebrow at Jerren. “What?”
“It came in late, after we caught up to you actually, but she remembered talking to you and you saying you were an editor. We have some agents at various border crossings. The report came in when we were already following you on the highway. You’re not an editor?”
“Cover story. I did a major in cybersecurity with a double minor in computer science and English literature. I did the minor in literature because I love reading and it was for my pleasure instead of for money.” She should have known they’d have someone at the border crossings though how they had one at that specific crossing wast confusing.

“My foster parents always told me to make a career for financial. security and to have something I could love as a hobby. I was smart enough to be able to do both. Kiefer knew what my

“My mom is smart, and she has a job.” Egan was still hanging on the perception of the insult from Jerren.
“Yes, she does.” Jerren gave a loud sigh and checked his watch.
“Mom, can’t we just go?” Egan looked longingly towards the door. “If my dad is too busy then we can go to the aquarium on our own?”
“I don’t think so,” she looked hopefully at Jerren who shook his head. “Your father wants to be the one to take you, so we have to wait.”
“This sucks,” Egan kicked his foot against the edge of the door.
“What sucks?” Tadgh’s voice called down the stairs as he took them. the same way Jerren did, skipping every other one.
“I’m all ready to go and my dad said we could go a long time ago and we’re still waiting,” his tone grated on Genesis’s ears but where she normally would have corrected him for impatience, she ignored it.
Tadgh squatted in front of Egan and took his hands in his big ones. and smiled at him, “I bet you’re really excited about the aquarium and spending time with your family. It’s really hard to be patient and wait but I know,” he squeezed his fingers gently, “your Dad will make it worth your while to be patient.”
“But it’s taking so long,” Egan grumbled.

“I know. What if while we’re waiting, we go outside and kick the football around?”
“You don’t kick footballs.” Egan frowned.
“You do in Ireland.” Tadgh laughed and lifted Egan up in his arms and carried him out the door, but he extended his hand out to
Genesis.
She wanted to balk but with Jerren watching and knowing he would report it back to Kiefer, she took his hand and let him take them outside. They walked to the garage and Tadgh set Egan on his feel but didn’t release Genesis’s hand. He reached up and took a soccer ball from a shelf and dropped it to the ground and kicked it into the driveway.
“That’s not a football,” Egan giggled.
“It is!” Tadgh feigned being insulted. “You kick it with your foot. It’s a football.”
Genesis wanted to pull her hand away from Tadgh’s but then Tadgh called out, “Jerren, you and Egan against me and Gen. First one to three goals, wins.”
“What are we using for posts?” Jerren asked and Tadgh pulled out some road pylons and Jerren laughed, “I forgot we had those.‘

“What do you have those for?” Egan eagerly took them from his uncle and raced to put them apart on the lawn.

“We needed to close a couple of roads off, so we used them,” Tadgh and Jerren exchanged a grin which told Genesis they’d closed the roads illegally and whatever the purpose of the road closure was, she didn’t want her son to learn. “We have a giant road closure sign around here somewhere too.”
“Why were you closing roads?” Egan asked with curiosity.
Genesis put her hand over Tadgh’s mouth, “keep it PG, O’Reilly.”
He kissed her palm, and she yanked her hand away and he chuckled, “there was a place of business we needed to work in, and we didn’t want anyone getting in our way.”
“Why?”
“We were robbing a bank.” Tadgh said with a grin.
“Tadgh,” Genesis hissed furiously.
“I’m kidding,” he ruffled Egan’s hair. “A business was using our products but didn’t pay for it. We were taking back the things we owned.” He turned and mouthed at Genesis, “and we were robbing a bank.”
She rolled her eyes trying not to laugh at his playful antics. This was not a side of him she’d ever seen before. Her experience. with him was always a man who was avoiding her like the plague and acting like he had a broom shoved up his arse.

He wrapped his arm around her neck the minute Egan’s back turned to race after the ball and pulled her forward and put a kiss to her lips, startling her. “Want to play with my balls?”
“Tadgh,” she looked around nervously. “What are you doing? Egan will be confused.”
“He’ll get used to it. He needs to get used to it. I told you. Genesis, I’m coming for you.” He smacked her backside as he darted around her, “now, did you ever play football? You do know you can’t touch it with your hands, right?”
She rubbed her bottom and frowned, “I know how to play soccer. I was on the high school team.”
Egan and Jerren were kicking the ball back and forth and Jerren was whispering to Egan what must have been their plan of attack because Egan was nodding excitedly as his eyes kept darting to his mother.
Egan kicked the ball at his mother and made wide eyes of surprise when she stopped the ball with her foot.
She dribbled it between her feet and laughed, “I’m very rusty. It’s been more than ten years since I last played but I can’t be worse than a little boy,” she teased Egan as she tried to rush the ball past him.
Egan and Jerren both rushed at her, and she gave a squeal at their attack and tried to pass the ball behind her to Tadgh. She was surprised at how hard Jerren went at Tadgh to get the ball and how intense Egan was urging Jerren to “get him.”

Jerren was keeping Tadgh from getting anywhere near the ball, more wrestling than anything while Egan was kicking it hard towards the makeshift goal. She chased after Egan but only half–heartedly and she cheered when he got his goal..

“I’m his mom. I’m allowed to cheer when he gets a goal.”
“You didn’t even try to stop him!” Tadgh protested her actions. as she giggled and didn’t even bother to hide the high–five she gave Egan.
“Okay, it’s me against the three of you but if I get three goals, I want a prize.”
“What prize?” Egan was excitedly hopping.
“I want a kiss from your mom.”
Egan made a face of complete revulsion, “Ew. Why?”
“She’s beautiful and I have always wanted to kiss her.” Tadgh shrugged.
“Weird.” Egan expressed his disgust, “what if we win?”
“What do you want?” Tadgh asked him.
“You have to piggyback me all the way through the aquarium.

“Deal.” Tadgh then charged past Jerren dodging his outstretched arm to collect the ball from beyond the pylons.
Genesis considered Tadgh must have been truly motivated because despite being down a goal at the beginning of their bet, he managed to dodge and weave and won by a score of three to two. The glee in his eyes as he approached her made her hold her hands up.
“I never agreed to the bet.”
“You can’t back out!” Tadgh tapped his cheek, “right here. Kiss. please.”
Egan was rolling in the grass like this was the funniest thing he’d ever seen, sweaty and flushed from the exertion and Jerren sitting next to him as if he were as exhausted as the boy but without an ounce of sweat on him.
“Fine,” she walked to Tadgh as if facing a horrific punishment. but the obvious joy in his eyes made her tummy somersault. She rose on tiptoes to kiss where his finger was still tapping and then at the last second, he turned his head, his hands cupping her cheeks as he stole a kiss from her lips. Egan’s gagging noises. made Tadgh laugh.
The kiss was simple, quick, under ten seconds and no tongue at all, but it made her heart race far more than she wanted to admit. She looked everywhere but at Tadgh and her eyes locked with the man who was watching from the bedroom upstairs, his

phone still at his ear. An indescribable emotion on his face as she held his gaze for a moment and then she turned back to Tadgh and kissed him quickly a second time, earning a look of surprise from Tadgh.
The soccer score might have been three to two but this war she was fighting, Genesis decided she was up more than a single point.
