Waiting Room

Genesis sat next to Nazar in a waiting room in a clinic which was owned and run by O’Reilly affiliated physicians and nurses. All the drugs a clinic could dream of were on hand given the huge pharmaceutical company backing the clan and yet, Genesis couldn’t chalk the numb feeling she was experiencing at the moment to anything manmade.
Jerren pulled Kiefer and Tadgh aside the minute they’d arrived at the clinic telling them he needed to talk to them about what went down at the warehouse and how apparently feds were demanding from the local police whether they’d received complaints of gun fire at the docks.
There was much fallout from the attempted kidnapping this evening even the feds wanted in on it and yet, she couldn’t focus on anything except the closed doors leading down to the surgical
suite.
Nazar cleared his throat. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?” she asked quietly.
“It’s my fault,” he sighed regretfully. “If I’d realized my flight attendant was on Oleg’s payroll this wouldn’t have happened.”
“It would have,” she shook her head. “Maybe not today but it still would have eventually. Your uncle and your cousin were coming for me and Egan because they were greedy bastards who

wanted what wasn’t theirs to have. They were desperate enough the minute they knew who I was, they murdered my best friend and hired a crew of mercenaries to come grab us.
“He hired mercenaries because he knew the men in our family would never be loyal to him to the point where they would kill my heir. The book,” he rasped out, “there is a book my cousin kept, and my team have been taking photos of the pages and sending them to me. It’s full of all the shit my uncle got him to do. He killed my wife. He killed my unborn child. He,” he ran this tongue along his teeth, “said he put an explosive device under the car which would cause it, the minute it hit a pothole. to lose the entire steering and braking system. When the car was finally at a standstill, he personally shot my wife and her entire entourage. His journal, if we can call it this, said he laughed. while he got rid of his competition. He considered my unborn son his competition.”
“He was a sick fuck,” Genesis griped.
“He got it from his father. There is detail on how he killed my father following step by step instructions outlined by his father. When they poisoned me several years ago, they didn’t think I’d survive. Out of nothing but pure malice, I named my other brother Xenik, my heir. Watching my uncle and cousin spit furiously when I put it all in motion was my favorite part of my recovery.”
“What is Xenik like?”
“He is the better part of me and the worst parts of Mak. When Mak died, he took a bit of us with him.”

“My son, Egan,” Genesis spoke softly, “has a gift. He has an ability to communicate with dead people.”
“You mentioned this the other day. You believe in this.”

“When he was a little boy, Egan came to me and told me all about his grandfather who would sit on the porch in his dreams. and whittle little animals,” she saw Nazar’s eyes widen. “He described him in the clothes I last saw him in. When we moved. back to Boston, very much against my will, Kiefer and Tadgh weren’t too believing of Egan’s gift. Egan woke up and told me in his dreams, his grandfather was making him a toy horse. He described in detail one I’d forgotten about. It was still in the house, and I was able to find it. Egan was incredibly happy to be able to hold something in his hand the man in his dreams actually made. He keeps it on his nightstand.”
“That’s very interesting.” Nazar said quietly.
“I know you don’t quite believe it, but when Astra died, my dad allowed her to cross the water to come to Egan and hug him one last time. Astra let us know herself by going to Egan in his dreams she was gone. It was how we knew to send someone to check on her.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” She blinked her tears, “I want to go home and hug Egan and tell him how much I love him but,” she choked on a sob, “I’m absolutely fucking terrified I’m going to get there and he’s going to tell me Lorcan was there, in his dreams. I don’t think I
