“Did Kiefer ever hurt you Mommy?”
“He made me sad,” she thought of him fucking around with Laoise, “and it hurt my feelings, but he never once bullied me like his sister, her friend, and his brother did.”
“What did his brother do?”
“He made me feel like I shouldn’t be there. Like,” she took a breath, “if Kiefer wasn’t home and I sat down to dinner or
breakfast, Tadgh would get up and leave.”
“That’s rude.”
“It is.”
“Or if I wanted to go for a swim in the pool and he was there, he would leave and tell everyone to leave as well. One time,” now she was remembering all of the ways Tadgh made her feel less, “Tadgh was asked to drive me home from a restaurant because. Kiefer got called away for a meeting. Tadgh asked me what my favorite music was, and I said I loved pop music but hated country music. He found a country station and blasted it the whole way home.”
“Tadgh sounds like a jerk,” Egan grunted.
“He was.”

“At least he didn’t push you down though,” Egan offered, “like the sister.”
“Yeah, she was a whole kind of mean I never want to expose you to.” This was the hard part, “Egan, Kiefer wants me to go live with him again but if I do, it means you have to come to. I don’t want you to live with someone who would let other people hurt us, especially you. You’re too important. It’s why I asked Astra to run here with you. I don’t want Kiefer to know about you.”
“How come?
“Because if he knows about you, he’s going to make us stay and we’ll never be safe because of his family.”
“Oh.”
“When Mommy was in California, I saw Kiefer again.”
“Did you tell him? Did you tell him about the bad things his sister and friend did?”
“I did.” She blinked as she recalled the scene yesterday, “I told him yesterday about all the bad things they did to me.”
“What did he do?”
“He locked me in a room and then he left me alone with his
sister and brother. Mommy was scared of what they would do to me, so I ran away again.”
“I’m glad you run away from them before they could hurt you again. If you told him they were mean, why did he leave you with them?”
“I don’t know but it’s a good thing he did leave because it allowed me to get away and come back to you.” She took a breath and wiped her own tears off her cheeks, “now, I think it’s time for all of us to get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow, we’re going to go on an adventure. We’re going to move to a new town with Auntie Astra. We’ll get you set up in a new school and you’ll make new friends.”
“But I like my old friends.”
“And they liked you too, Egan but it’s safest this way. Kiefer found me which means he is probably already at our old house trying to find where we went.”
“What if he finds us again? Do we have to keep running away?”
“As long as Aoife and Laoise are part of his family and are going to be a risk to you, I will always run away from him.”
He sighed sadly and made a face, “Mom, you said you loved Kiefer. Do you still love him?”
“No.” She wasn’t lying at this point. “When I needed him the most, he was too busy with his family to come help me and because of it I lost your brother. There were people who paid your dad to keep them safe and yet he couldn’t do it for me. Your dad couldn’t keep us safe, and it made me very scared and angry with him.
“Kiefer is my Dad, right?”
She nodded.
“I wish he wasn’t a bad guy, and I wish his family wasn’t mean. I think it would be neat to have a dad.” He sniffed loudly with big tears in his eyes. “I want a dad.”
“Egan,” she felt her heart break at his words but when he rolled away from her and laid in the bed and declared he wanted to go to sleep, her broken heart shattered into a million shards. She looked at Astra who was clutching her own chest as if in pain.
She leaned over and kissed his check, but he brushed it off as if angry with her and she got off the bed and moved to the far side of the room with Astra.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have told him all that.”
“No. It’s better to start telling him now. It’s only going to get harder, Gen. The fucker let his family abuse the hell out of you. He kept cameras in his house twenty–four seven. You can’t tell me he didn’t know what they were doing to you.” Astra whispered back rubbing her trying to control her own emotions.

“I know.” She looked at where Egan was squeezing his eyes shut as if not wanting to look at them. “He’s hurting though and it’s killing me.”

nothing.” Astra held her hands out to take Genesis‘ in hers. “Did he hurt you? When he captured you?”
“He slapped me on the ass.” She grinned as she thought of the scene she created. “I made sure every single person in the mall where he grabbed me saw and heard him taking me out. I was screeching like a banshee.”
“Was the bitch really there? You told Egan, Aoife was there.”
“She was,” her smirk grew wider, “I jumped her. I punched her face. and managed to get Tadgh’s gun off him and fire a shot at her.”
“Holy shit, you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did. I was pretty disappointed actually. After all the time you and I have spent at the gun range, and I missed my shot, but I was also being held back by Kiefer and wrestling Tadgh.”
“He’s a big guy.”
“Six feet and easy two hundred and thirty pounds of solid muscle and I gave him a run for his money. They underestimated me this time.”
“You’ve been training seven years on what to do if they come for you.”
“Yeah, I have but I’d hoped I’d never see the day.” She shook her
head.

“How did he look?” Astra leased her. “You mentioned the solid wall of muscle.”
“He looks good but you and I both know he’s always done it for
me.”
“You lied to your son just now,” Astra accused with a shake of her head. “You told him you didn’t love Kiefer.”
“I don’t.”
“Yeah right. It’s why you haven’t dated in seven years or why another man hasn’t even turned your head. It’s why despite being an identical twin, the minute you locked eyes with Tadgh across the street you knew it was Tadgh and not Kiefer because he’s the other half of your soul.”
“Astra.”
“Look, don’t get me wrong. I hate the guy for what he did to you. I loathe him for the pain he put you through and how he took you from me.”
Genesis blinked away the tears.
“I mean when you got married without me even being there, I was so angry with you and then he made you move to Boston from Columbus. I hated him and I was furious with you because you left me without even looking back.”
“I did look back, Astra.” They’d forced this argument so many times over the last seven years. “You cut me off, not the other

“Lower your voice,” she smacked at Astra and shot a look to see if Egan heard her. His eyes were not as squeezed shut now and she watched him to see if he fell asleep.
“You ditched me for D.” Astra said folding her arms over her chest.
“It was really good dick though,” she smirked back at Astra.
“He was a ginger. It wasn’t supposed to be life changing.”
“But it was. I loved him so much Astra. I would have died for him.” She looked over at Egan, “but I love him more. When the doctor at the hospital did the ultrasound to confirm whether I was truly miscarrying and said there was still one viable setus there, I knew it didn’t matter how much I loved Kiefer. I needed to protect my child.” A memory of the day prior’s events struck her, “did you know he got a bill from the hospital? It was for an abortion, and he has spent the last seven years thinking I aborted his kid. I was given the same copy of the bill before I even left the hospital so not sure why they sent him one since I paid it before I left. I asked the nurse at the time why they were billing me for an abortion when I miscarried, and she said spontaneous abortion is the technical name they use. He had the audacity to tell me he’s carried the bill around for seven years to remind him women can’t be trusted. Idiot.”

“Yup and then he locked me in his bedroom and told me to rest up because we’d be sleeping together when he got back.”
“No! He expected you to fuck him?”
“Yup. He denied sleeping with Laoise.”
“You caught him red handed. Did he have anything to say for himself?”
“He kept saying he never fucked her. Like I’m going to believe him. His sister sent me a video of Laoise blowing him. It was his hand with his wedding ring on her head which was bobbing up and down on him. He can say what he wants but the video was him.”
“How cringey is it that his sister was in the room taking a video of getting blown?”
“Not the most cringey thing she’s done. One time Kiefer she wanted the store manager to throw in a pair of shoes with her dress because Kiefer gave her a spending cap. She went down on the store manager, a woman, mind you, in the dressing room. She got the shoes free. I mean she is a snake so maybe she used her forked tongue.”
“Nasty.”
“She really is. It felt so good to bust her nose.”

“Tomorrow, we head out so we should try to sleep.”
“Before we do though, we need to do the DNA thing, Gen. If you
go missing, I want to have the DNA already done. We should have done this years ago.” She tossed an ancestry kit at her friend.
“Yeah, but if put my id into the system now he’ll find me.”
“We’ll mail it tomorrow from here and its only email addresses. I checked.” At Genesis‘ nod she groaned, “We’re really moving to Milwaukee? The winters are going to be awful.” Astra complained.
“Not any worse than living in Calgary for the last seven years. I mean the winters were horrid, worse than Boston or Columbus
ever was. If we could tolerate a Canadian winter, we can handle
Wisconsin.”
“Why can’t we go somewhere warm? Like Atlanta or Birmingham.”
“Because you melt in the heat,” she laughed at Astra. “Seriously. The minute we have a day which requires you to put on an antiperspirant you turn into a whiny bitch. Do you not remember how much you complained in Florida?”
“I think I could get used to it.”
“I think you’re fooling yourself.” Genesis hugged her friend,
‘come on. Bedtime. Tomorrow is a new day.”
