Before the long voice message finished playing, my brother hurriedly turned it off.
He didn’t listen to the rest of it, but everyone’s expressions were not good.
My brother hadn’t recovered from the huge contrast in his fiancée’s behavior when he heard her reveal his own private thoughts. Confused nd guilty, he didn’t even have the heart to speak up for his beloved fiancée anymore, only nervously looking at our parents.
My brother couldn’t help but swallow hard, “Dad, Mom, it’s not, it’s not like that. I never said such things. She’s making it up.”
My dad just gave him a scrutinizing look, saying nothing. This made my brother even more nervous, sweat beading on his forehead.
“Let’s put the wedding on hold for now,” my dad finally spoke, dropping this sentence before getting up and returning to his room.
My mom also followed my dad, leaving just me and William, the two siblings. Neither of us spoke first.
As if a long time had passed, I finally couldn’t stand the oppressive atmosphere and broke the silence. “I didn’t expect it to turn out like this -ither. I was just afraid you were being deceived, brother. I didn’t think it would end up like this.”
I didn’t know what else to say. My brother opened his mouth and said, “I know.”
His eyes behind his glasses kept looking down at the floor, lost in thought.
I also returned to my room. Brian had sent so many voice messages and screenshots, how could I have listened to them all?
I only wanted my family to see Chloe’s true face. I didn’t expect it to end up like this.
Soon after, my dad came to knock on my door. He wanted to listen to the rest of the voice message from earlier. Since I had found the evidence, it was natural that my brother’s interruption wouldn’t stop him.
My dad frowned as he listened to the whole thing, his expression becoming increasingly grim. As a prominent figure in the business world, being described as an easily manipulated fool by Chloe, how could he not be angry?
I also sat there uneasily, cursing Chloe while pleading for my brother.
“That damn Chloe, how dare she say such things. Dad, these words might not necessarily be what my brother said. It could just be Chloe making things up. Please don’t be angry.”
The William in Chloe’s words – that gentle, steady, and sensible William – had become a stranger who wanted to monopolize our family’s wealth, didn’t take me seriously, and was even eager to replace my dad’s position. It was indeed hard to accept for a moment.
I had been back and playing around for quite a while. It was time to go work at our family company. I was sent by my dad to my brother’s branch company, in the same department as Chloe. This was also my dad’s idea.
I didn’t know until I went there, but Chloe really had quite an air about her. She didn’t do any work, but she was all about romance. She expected to be waited on hand and foot.
An intern in the department was carrying coffee while walking and complaining bitterly, “She’s also a newcomer, how come I have to serve her tea and run errands? Am I here to work or to be her maid?”
Chloe was sitting in my brother’s private office, filing her nails while waiting for someone to bring her coffee. When the intern came in, she didn’t even lift her head, just pointed with her chin and said flatly, “Put it there.”
“What a big shot attitude. She’s not even officially hired yet and she’s already acting like this.”
I couldn’t help but speak up. She was startled by my sudden entrance and hurriedly put away the manicure tools on the desk.
After seeing it was me, she questioned in surprise: “How come it’s you? What are you doing here?”
