Chapter 02
That very night, Jason Brooks broke up with me.
He texted saying he had thought it over and felt students should prioritize studies, hoping we could wait until after the college entrance exams to discuss anything. else.
. I didn’t resent him for it.
After all, his grades were so good and he had always aimed for Harvard. I could understand him not wanting academics to suffer.
But I never imagined that within days, Jason Brooks would go official with Natalie Wilkinson.
On social media, I saw matching posts from them holding hands in the library. The caption read: “Being with the right person makes you better and better.” Below was a flood of congratulations.
“The top two students together, I’m so jealous!”
“Imagine how smart their kids will be, IQ 180?”
The photo was beautifully taken, a beam of sunlight streaming in through the window, illuminating their interlocked fingers.
The girl’s hands were fair and elegant, the kind Jason Brooks liked.
He had told me many times that my flashy manicures looked tacky.
Yes, Natalie Wilkinson had always been his type.
Beautiful, with long straight black hair, the epitome of a pure and innocent look, and always far ahead in academics – the very image of a female lead in a teen
movie.
While I had just pestered him until he reluctantly gave in.
My hands shook slightly as I gripped my phone, realizing belatedly what Jason Brooks meant.
His excuse about focusing on studies was just a way to dump me.
Yet he couldn’t even be bothered to keep up that pretense. Breaking up and posting this a few days later without any regard for me.

Indeed, love between top students was so beautiful.
They would go to Harvard together and have a bright future.
While I was just a defective misfit that everyone felt didn’t belong!
I picked up my phone to call Jason Brooks.
It took a long time for him to answer.
I wanted to curse him out, but the moment I spoke, my throat tightened.
“Jason Brooks, what is this supposed to mean?” I choked out. “I thought you wanted to focus on studying?”
Jason Brooks was silent for a
Jason Brooks was silent for a bit before saying softly:
“I’m sorry Emily Anderson, I can’t control my feelings.
We were never compatible. She’s different from you. Being with Natalie won’t affect my studies.”
“What about me then!” I cried in anguish. “What am I supposed to do?! Wasn’t I
good enough to you?”
“I’m sorry,” Jason Brooks said slowly but firmly. “You may be pitiful but there’s
nothing I can do.”
I heard Natalie Wilkinson’s muffled voice in the background.
“Jason, I found a book…”
Jason Brooks sounded a bit flustered. “I have to go. Please don’t contact me
anymore.”
With that, he hung up.
My vision blurred as tears uncontrollably streamed down from my stinging eyes.
In that moment, I felt it wasn’t just my feelings being trampled.
It was my dignity.
I was a loser, carelessly kicked aside for having no value.
And it was all because my grades were bad.
Being with me would affect his studies, but being with Natalie Wilkinson wouldn’t. They were a golden couple. What was I? An outcast.
I cried all night. The next morning, my eyes were so swollen I could barely open

them.
My temples throbbed painfully. I had never felt so miserable.
Yet, a spark ignited in my heart, setting off a raging fire.
I’m going to study hard!
I’ll make those who looked down on me regret it. I’ll prove my own worth!
