chapter Ten: False hopes
Samantha’s POV
I was trapped in a weird room with no memory of how I got there. The green bulb on the ceiling cast shadows on my surroundings, making it difficult for me to see anything but vague shapes and blurs.
Lost in thought, I tried to make sense of my surroundings and
wondered what kind of room it was when, all of a sudden, a loud
knock at the door snapped me back to reality.I got up with my
bare feet cold on the floor and felt a strange pull drawing me.
towards the door.
My hand grasped the cold metal handle and I opened the door.
to find a woman who looked strangely similar to me.
Her hair was a blonde bob, her emerald–green eyes sparkled
with a smile, and her white dress shone brightly. There was
something unsettling about her that made my hair stand on end.
“Samantha, sweetie. Can I come in?” she asked politely with a
smile.
My lips parted in a silent gasp and I stepped out of the doorway
while still holding the door open.
“Do we know each other?”
The woman took a step closer, her eyes never leaving mine.“It’s me, darling. Your mom.”
“My mom?” I repeated, my voice cracking. “But my mom is
dead.”
Her smile faltered for a moment, and she reached out a hand to
brush a strand of hair behind my ear.
“Oh no, darling. There is no death here. We are joined together,
forever.”
I didn’t know what to think of this bizarre situation. My eyes
scanned the room slowly before they landed on her.
“If you’re really my mother, why did you abandon me to suffer? You left me to endure a childhood of hell with Dad and his wife,
who made my life a living nightmare.”
Tears pooled in my eyes. I bit my lip hard, struggling not to sob.
The woman looked troubled. “I’m sorry, sweetie. I didn’t leave
you. I’ve always been here. We were separated by
circumstances beyond our control, but that’s all in the past now.
I promise you that no one is ever going to hurt you again.”
I doubted her words and fidgeted with my hands. It seemed like
everyone in my life had a way of causing me pain.
“You are now as free as a bird, my dear beautiful girl.”
She smiled once more, pulling gently at my arm. Without
hesitation, I followed her and had an odd feeling of security with her presence beside me and an urge inside to reach for her.
We entered another dark room, where dim light spilled from two
windows on either side of the wall. When she opened her arms
to hug me, I didn’t feel any pain anymore. I felt loved, and for the
first time in a very long time, I felt a true connection to al
motherly bond.
A hand pulled at my leg, disrupting my sleep. I groaned, wanting
to shout at the person to leave me the hell alone, but they
persisted. I opened one eye, wincing at the sharp pain in my
head. The face before me was unfamiliar.
“Oh, thank the goddess you’re awake. I was beginning to think.
you suffered a concussion
Π
He flashed a carefree smile, and I studied his face. He looked
young, likely in his mid to late twenties, and his dark, glossy hair
struck a familiar chord and reminded me of Theo.
“Who are you?”
I was stuck in another weird room with a stranger – a recurring
theme in my dreams and real life. Good thing he woke me up,
since werewolf legend says that dreaming of dead loved ones
can trap you in a life–or–death limbo.
I wasn’t afraid of death and didn’t have much to live for anyway.
Still, I was grateful that the stranger woke me up.
That dream seemed too real.
“I’m Doctor Alex, but feel free to call me Alex. Theo brought you
to my care last night after rescuing you from a wolf attack.”
I shivered involuntarily at the reminder of that dreadful ordeal.
“Don’t worry your pretty head about anything. You’re in the right
place. Theo would rather burn down the whole pack than let
anyone harm you.”
“Am I in Theo’s park?”
He nodded. “Yep, this is Silver park.”
A tightness in my chest and a flare of adrenaline made my body jerk in surprise. My heart began racing. I’d heard rumors about
the Silver wolves and they weren’t good.
“And where is Theo? He was badly wounded last night. Is he
okay?”
“That one? He’s like a cat with a never–ending supply of lives.
Don’t sweat it, he’s just a little worse for wear… but I’m sure he’ll
scrape himself off the floor and be back to his old self in no
time.”
My heart squeezed with guilt. Theo almost died because of me.
“And what about me?” I asked weakly. “I can feel a bandage on
my head.”
Daniel nodded sympathetically and his hand went to my
forehead, gently checking the bandage wrapping my wound with
a tender touch.
“Thankfully, you didn’t sustain any internal injuries and you just
need lots of rest and”
Someone walked in and my heart skipped over. Theo was here.
and a relieved gasp escaped my lips. I felt a strong urge to leap
up and hug him, but I stopped myself, aware that Alex was in
the room, and such a display would be awkward.
After all, Theo was my mate, but it was a bond forced by
circumstance, not genuine affection. I doubted whether he felt
anything romantic for me, and maybe had a girlfriend waiting for him, a beautiful girl who held his heart.
But I noticed the dark circles under his eyes and the pallor of his
skin. He looked exhausted and pale. His gaze traveled from my
face, to my body and back to my face.
His fingers took mine and stroked soothing patterns across my
knuckles. “Theo…” My throat constricted in anticipation, and
suddenly tears burned behind my eyes.
“I’m glad to see you awake, Samantha” he murmured. He kissed the top of my head and sighed. Then his eyes hardened and he fixed Alex with a piercing glare that sent a chill throughout my
being. “Why didn’t you send for me?”
Alex rolled his eyes and we exchanged a smile.
“Thank you both for everything. I owe you my life, as I would
have succumbed to my injuries if you hadn’t intervened. Alex,
thanks for your medical help. And Theo,” I turned to face him, “how did you manage to locate me in time?”
He gestured to his chest and his finger tapped against his heart.
My attention was drawn to his face, where I shivered at the
collection of scars that weren’t there the last time I saw him.
Some were faint and fading while others were fresh and raw.
“Are you going to be okay?” I asked softly. “Please tell me you
will.”
“I’ll try my best,” he said simply, a hint of a smirk.tugging at the
corner of his mouth.
My hands cupped his face. He was startled at first, then he
broke into a leisurely smile. His smile melted my heart and I was going crazy with happiness that Theo was alive.
“Were you running away from your father?” He asked after a
while. “That was such an ungodly hour of the night for you to be
seen all alone.”
I sighed and lay back on the bed. “I know, was just tired of it all
and”
A voice at the door stopped me. “Good morning, Alpha. You
have to take your second shot of insulin. Also, the council
members are also anxious to hear from you. They are all
downstairs.”
I snapped my head up when Theo rose. I was confused,
wondering why they called him Alpha.
Theo didn’t take note of my discomfort, and when another
person called him Alpha, my suspicion grew.
Theo was alpha. That confirmed his strong aura. But why did he
lie about being omega?
When he turned to face me, I shrank back. He reached out and
ran his hands through my curls
“You should get some rest,” he whispered. I kept my gaze fixed
on him and his smile faded.
“What’s wrong? Do you feel pain? I can get some painkillers-”
“You lied to me!” I bristled from the hurt and the force of my
tone. “All this time, you’ve been lying about your identity?”
Theo opened his mouth to talk, but no words came out. Guilt
clouded his face and he scratched the back of his neck.
“I thought so. Cat got your tongue”
“Samantha, please calm down.”
Before he could continue pleading with me, my voice lowered to
a whisper, laced with venom, “How could you?! This doesn’t
even make any sense to me. Was what my father said about
you true? Did you truly deceive everyone for your selfish gain?”
“Of course not,” he insisted, taking a step closer.
I glared at him. “Then why lie? No need to explain because I
won’t believe you.”
The hurt in my heart tore my insides apart like a thousand
knives. “Samantha,” he whispered gently, resting his palms on either side of my cheeks and stared deeply into my eyes
“I meant no harm, and I still do not mean any harm. I was just.
desperate for some solutions to my problems.”
I wanted nothing more than for Theo to hold me, to comfort me
and assure me that everything was going to be fine.
But I was too furious and hurt to give Theo the chance. I pushed off the bed and created a distance from him.
“Your desperation drove you to deceit?” I scoffed. “I foolishly thought you’d be different. Unfortunately, you’ve proven that you’re just like every other person – a bunch of liars and users.”
