chapter Twelve: A taste of Happiness.
The joy of finding one’s companion and the other half of one’s
soul was indescribable. I envied those who had discovered their
wolf earlier, as this feeling was truly glorious. There was at
sudden stillness and a warmth that spread through my chest when I felt a sensation of my wolf’s soft fur brushing against my
skin.
I could see her in my eyes. My majestic wolf with the same.
shade of green eyes as mine. It felt as though I’d finally found at
missing piece of myself, and I no longer needed to be alone.
I named her Aurora. She was a part of me, and our bond was the
most wholesome and fulfilling experience I had ever known.
The clock on the nightstand showed 4:00 p.m. I noted this day, because it was a remarkable one. The day I would finally prove
to everyone that I was not useless after all.
“Why didn’t you connect with me all this while?” I accused her,
while gazing at the ceiling fan that rotated lazily. “You made me
suffer in the hands of my family and because of your refusal to
connect with me, my position was given to my sister.”
She was silent, and made me wonder why she was not.
responding. I waited patiently and guessed at the live streaming
through a partially open window.
“Aurora, are you there? Please don’t leave me again.”
No response.
I could see her in my eyes and I could hear her deep growl
resonating in my mind, but she refused to speak. She was
acting reluctant and I wondered if she disliked me.
Perhaps that explains why she’s been silent for years. My heart
began racing. I needed her and didn’t want to be alone.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her. “Do I offend you?”
Her silence frustrated me and I almost burst into tears. I sat
cross–legged on my bed and tapped my fingers nervously.
“Please talk to me. Do you plan to abandon me like everyone
else?”
“You’re not the only one feeling frustrated,” Aurora responded,
her voice echoing in my mind. I jerked my head up, startled, as
our newfound connection allowed us to communicate
telepathically. This was a new sensation, and it would take
some time for me to adjust to hearing her thoughts and feelings.
“Why are you sad?” I asked, knowing I’ll do anything within my
power to make her happy.
“Because of you. Your feelings affect me.”
“I’m sorry. I don’t know” Her words made me feel nervous. I
didn’t want the others to be upset because of me, and I was
also afraid that my wolf would think I was weak and leave me. It
took me so many years to connect with her.
“Don’t apologize, Samantha. I just worry about you and I
suggest you can try to trust Theo. He’s our mate, after all.
“Just because he’s our mate doesn’t mean he can’t hurt us. My
father, who gave birth to me, abandoned me. Those we love the
most can betray us the deepest. Look at you, for instance. You
left me to suffer alone and allowed Mia to take my place.”
Aurora remained silent for a moment, which I found annoying.
My breath evened out as I waited for her to speak. But despite
my annoyance, I loved the comforting weight of her presence
and felt like shifting into my wolf and running through a forest.
“So, what’s your plan?” she finally spoke. “Do you want to return
to the Dark Moon pack?”
I didn’t know how to respond to that because going there was
like shooting myself in the foot. My family would keep exploiting
me, and I would keep giving Mia my blood.
“I’m unsure about returning to the Dark Moon pack, but I also
don’t have options. If I join another pack as a rogue, it would be
dangerous for us, and I risk being treated as a slave. And as for
staying here with Theo… I’m struggling to trust him, despite your
advice. I don’t see a way forward.”
The connection was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. A
maid stepped in with a tray of food. I didn’t realize how time had
flown so fast.
The maid’s frown was noticeable from her sharp, angular face
and high cheekbones. I was used to people mistreating me and
wouldn’t be surprised that the maid would disrespect me.
She had pale skin and her dark hair was neatly plated into
pigtails that hung past her shoulder. She wore a crisp white.
blouse tucked into a long dark skirt that reached just above her
ankles. I watched her set the tray down on a small table. Her
nose scrunched up in disgust, and I wondered if I had a bad
odor.
The aroma of freshly cooked food made my stomach rumble.
The maid’s eyes scanned the room. I waited for her to leave, but
she stood in front of me with her arms folded.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” I asked politely.
She sneered,” It’s baffling that the Alpha would bother rescuing
you.”
“Excuse me?” i bristled. She rolled her eyes and began arranging
the tray.
“You heard me right. Aren’t you from the Dark Moon pack? The
evil pack that poisoned Alpha Theo?”
“What are you talking about? Theo wasn’t poisoned. He was
only”
“You should believe her,” Aurora spoke in my head. “Let’s check
on our mate and see if he is poisoned for real.”
In a panic, I stood abruptly, causing the tray to rattle. The maid
was startled and her eyes doubled in size. She probably thought
I was about to attack her. I ran past her instead
“Where are you going?” She called after me, but I did not
respond. I ran out of my room and stopped because I didn’t
even know where Theo was. I began searching from room to
room, hoping to see him.
