chapter Thirteen: Silver Lining
I paused in front of a sturdy wooden door, recognizing it as
Theo’s room. His voice was audible from outside, engaged in a
heated discussion with Alex.
Although the other voice was softer and unclear, I knew they
were arguing. My hand grasped the brass handle, and I
hesitated, unsure if I should enter.
A chill draft seeped through the door’s crack, making me
wonder how cold the room was. The maid’s earlier comment
about his health suddenly made sense. It explained Theo’s pale
complexion, faint noises, and winces.
Fear twisted in my intestine. Despite my anger towards him, I
didn’t want him dead.
“Go in already,” Aurora whined. I took a deep breath and pushed
the door open. The argument was heated and filled the room,
startling me because I realized I didn’t even know him well
enough to know his temperament.
His aura was imposing even in his weakened state. I had alpha
blood, but Theo was intimidating and I couldn’t help but feel
afraid.
Despite his injury which I could see clearly now because he was
shirtless, he could get the strongest of people to fall on their
knees. He was a good actor to have suppressed his aura all this
while.
Seeing a large scar across the top portion of his chest made me
wince. It was a miracle he survived.
I heard soft footsteps behind me and turned around. The maid
from earlier gave me a cautious look before walking past me
and heading to Theo. She fidgeted slightly and clasped her
hands behind her.
“Alpha. Someone is here to see you.”
The argument stopped the moment Theo noticed my presence.
His smile was weak but genuine as he approached me.
“Samantha?”
His voice was raspy and strained from arguing and he moved
slowly, each step costing him great effort.
“Obviously, you must have heard us arguing like beasts,” Alex
chuckled and pointed to Theo. “Blame him for that.”
I managed a small smile. “Actually, that’s not why I’m here.”
Alex, being tall, leaned down to hear me better. “Please don’t tell

me you’re here to aggravate Theo further; he’s already on edge.”
“I’m not here to fight,” I began, but Theo interrupted, “Let her in,
Alex, and leave my room now.”
Alex rolled his eyes. “See what I mean? He’s always yelling at
- me. You’re the only one who can tame him, so I beg you to
please humble him. I’ll be glad to see that.”
Once we were alone, Theo sighed. His bloodshot eyes roamed over my body. “Come in, and please shut the door.”
I shut the door but did not leave it. I remained there, and my
nose picked up the metallic smell of blood hanging in the air. Remembering why I was here, I took several steps forward.
The room was cluttered with medical supplies, blood–soaked
tissues and bandages littered on the floor, and half–empty
bottles. Theo was trying hard to toss them into a trash bin.
overflowing with medical waste sitting in the corner., but it was
too late. He was so desperate to hide them that he almost
toppled the stool in front of him onto the ground.
I took another step when he stumbled backward and grabbed
his arm.
“I think it would be more efficient if the maids do the cleaning,” I
suggested. “You need to lay back.”

Theo complied, exhaling a weary sigh. I guided him to the bed. with a gentle touch, and despite being the alpha, he followed my
lead without resistance. Then he closed a leather medical bag,
filled with an assortment of instruments. His room was big, and I
didn’t realize how huge the house was until now.
“What’s going on with you?” I asked, my gaze fixed on him,
seeking the truth. “Something’s off, and you need to tell me.”
Theo was exhausted and kept breathing heavily. My concern for
him overruled the hurt he’d caused me.
“Samantha, I know you want to leave, and I understand why
you’re upset, but I mean no harm.”
“Theo, listen”
“No, you listen,” he raised a hand to stop me. “I won’t let you go.
We’re mates and I want you by my side.”
His words sparked a warm sensation within me. It seemed
foolish and unrealistic to trust a man again after Daniel’s
betrayal, but my heart raced with excitement at the possibility of
having someone genuinely care for me.
“I’m not leaving.”
Theo’s eyes widened in surprise at my response. He looked
away, avoiding eye contact with me. A huge smile spread across

his face, and I watched his happiness fill the room in warmth.
He looked happier than I’d ever seen him and it brought a wave
of emotions to wash over me. Was it because he still believed in
love or something more?
After some silence passed between us, Theo spoke. “Thank
you,” he said softly. His tone Lucid warmth that I hadn’t
expected. “Thank you for trusting me enough to stay.”
“I stayed to help you with the poison. I won’t leave until I cure
you.”
Just then, Alex burst back in, excitement filling his voice. “Theo,
we’ve found the antidote to the poison!”
