chapter Nine: A price of passion
Theo’s POV
The poison in my system hurt more than a gunshot. Alex’s hands wrapped the gauze around my forehead, arm, and leg. I felt a stab of stinging pain as the antiseptic touched my raw
skin, and my eyes watered involuntarily.
The gash on my forehead was deep, and the slash on my arm and leg were equally painful. I had escaped death, but just
barely.
“Fuck, Alex! Be fucking gentle.”
“Alpha, you’re poisoned. It will get worse if we don’t find a
solution as soon as we can.”
I bit my lip and tried to keep my movements to a minimum. Alex
wrapped the bandages around my body. The pressure was tight,
and the stinging pain lingered. I winced when Alex secured the
final bandage in place.
“It hurts! Fuck,” I lashed out. A sad smile flirted at the edges of
Alex’s lips, and I glared back at him. Sweat gathered across my
brow despite the cold air blowing onto my body..
Alex was my best friend and Crescent Pack doctor. He was a
great physician, but my body was covered in sword slashes,
thanks to those bastards at the Dark Moon pack.
“All done, Alpha,” Alex said, patting my leg. “I need to get to
work. You’re lucky to be alive, Theo. These wounds are deep and
the poison in your body needs to be expelled before it gets to
your vital organs.”
The bandages felt like they were suffocating me. I lay back on
the bed, trying to catch my breath.
“They’re not that deep. I’ll be fine.”
Alex looked annoyed. “If those slashes had cut any deeper, they
would have caused long–lasting damage. You’re lucky they didn’t
hit any major veins.”
“Stop condemning me already. I had to go to the Dark Moon.
pack, Alex. I had to find a solution to our pack’s problem.”
Alex shook his head. “I’m not condemning you. You know, you’re
not only my Alpha. You are my friend. Best friend.”
He was getting angry, but I knew he was just worried about my
health.
“I had to find out why our pack is being poisoned.”
Alex’s eyes narrowed. “And what did you find out?”
I hesitated before speaking. “Nothing much, but I was so close
to victory.”
“My point exactly. You can’t just waltz in there and get your answers. You’re not even a real omega! Now you’re poisoned,
and we don’t even have an antidote.”
I shook my head, knowing Alex wouldn’t understand. “I couldn’t
let Samantha die.”
Alex’s eyes narrowed in confusion, and they comically widened
in surprise. “Samantha? The same girl you contacted me through the mind link and asked me to bring a scar remover
for?”
I nodded, my eyes closing in exhaustion. “The same one.”
Alex listened to me explain my ordeal even though I had given. him snippets over our mind link.
“They threatened me with Samantha. If I didn’t take the poison,
they would give it to Samantha.”
“You’ve lost your mind, Theo! Obviously it’s a trap!”
A nagging headache began to pound against my temples as I
struggled to ignore his rant.
“Are you insane? You risked your life, and the safety of our pack for a fucking stranger?”
I felt a growl rising in my throat. “She’s not a stranger, Alex. Watch your words.”
Alex’s apology was hasty, but he didn’t back down. “I apologize, but as Alpha of the Crescent Pack, your duty is more important than love. Our pack members are being poisoned one by one, and all you can think about is some woman?”
My warning growl turned into a snarl. “Don’t speak about the Luna of the Crescent Pack like that, Alex.”
Alex’s eyes widened in shock. “Luna?”
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. “Samantha is
my destined mate, Alex.”
He laughed harshly, but the truth hit him, knowing that a werewolf could never give up the mate. “You’re not thinking clearly, Theo. The medication is clearly having an effect on you. You need to recuperate, and it’s not safe for you to shift with all
the wounds on your body. It will-”
An intense pain seized my head, and my body instinctively
sensed that Samantha was in danger. I could hear her fear in my
mind and leapt up, startling Alex.
“What’s going on?”
“She’s in danger,” I responded hurriedly. “I need to go save her.”
Alex tried but couldn’t stop me. Outside the pack house, I
shifted and began running into the thick forest. My wolf hadn’t
recovered yet, but my feet pounded against the soft dirt as I
pushed myself harder, determined to reach Samantha in time.
In the dark woods, I stumbled through numerous bushes and
branches, tripping over rocks and fallen tree trunks.
I tracked her scent, and my fears were confirmed. A wolf was
about to attack her. It was a gamma wolf, and I could easily
defeat it in my healthy state. But my wolf was injured, and I hoped I would be able to rescue Samantha.
The moonlight reflected off the wolf’s shiny brown pelt and golden yellow eyes. Samantha was pinned beneath its muscular frame, and I growled when the wolf lifted Samantha and dug its
claws into her neck.
Fury charged me like a wild bull as a black cloud of rage engulfed me. In a flash, I leaped from the shadows and launched myself against the wolf, knocking it backwards.
I closed in quickly and launched myself at the wolf, knocking it to the ground as I bit his shoulder hard. I tore open the wolf’s
neck,
og hard until blood splashed all over the forest floor.
I rushed to Samantha’s side. She was passed out.
Blood oozed from her neck, and I tried to wipe away the trail of
blood, but it wasn’t working.
We managed to get back to Alex. I was sure that he could tell at
a glance that my injuries were worse, but he chose to bandage
Samantha first.
“You’re more concerned about her, and if I attend to you first,
you would never obey the cure.”
I winced and went on my knees, trembling, and my teeth. chattering. Alex hurried with Samantha and made her lie on the
sofa.
“Her injuries are external. You need to think about yours and
save your life first.”
I gazed at Samantha and watched her eyelids close. A pang of fear struck me. Would she ever be able to forgive me for
concealing the truth and deceiving her? I had vowed to always
be honest with her, and the thought of her discovering my lie
about my status filled me with dread.
